Approximately 52.9cm in its scabbard, blade length 36.5cm. Condition: generally good. Mostly clean blade, with some minor pitting at the ricasso. The wooden grip is missing a screw, and there is also a small possibility that the wooden grip is a later replacement. Working button release catch to the pommel. A WW2 / Territorial Efficiency medal group, awarded to 5048992 Pte R. Dutton of the 6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. To include: the 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star, 1939-45 War Medal, Defence Medal, and the Territorial Efficiency Medal. Notes: published records confirm that Pte Dutton was wounded in action while serving in North West Europe. The 6th Battalion saw heavy fighting in Normandy at the time, and there is a long list of other wounded men recorded on the list. Pte Dutton’s date of wounding has ‘DNR’ (Date Not Recorded) next to it, but the date is likely to have been between 7th - 9th August 1944. The WW2 campaign medals are unnamed as issued and complete with their ribbons. The Territorial Medal is the first type, or pre 1948, and is named in the usual way, and also is complete with its ribbon. Condition: good. Normal age related darkening to the medals, and some service wear, but nothing that detracts whatsoever.

Lot 3

A Boer War medal pair, awarded to 1092 Pte Roland Twemlow of the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. To include: the Queen’s South Africa Medal, with clasps for Laing’s Nek, Transvaal, Orange Free State, and Cape Colony (ghost dates to the reverse). Plus, the King’s South Africa Medal, with clasps for 1901 and 1902. Notes: the award of the clasps are confirmed on the relevant rolls, but there appears to have been some confusion over Pte Twemlow’s first name initial when it came to impressing the naming on the medals, with the QSA being named to ‘P. Twemlow’ and the KSA being named to ‘R. Twemlow’, with different source documents using different initials. Roland was born July 11th 1866, in Bucknall, Staffordshire, and attested for service in 1885. Each medal is complete with its original ribbons. Condition: some wear commensurate with age and use. Some age related toning to the medals, and signs of polishing, resulting on loss of detail to the high points. Tight swivel suspension on the QSA, with the suspension on the KSA being slightly slack. Slight edge bruise to the KSA (as seen in image). The ribbons are soiled and a little ragged in places, but are original.

Lot 127

A scarce and important early 20th century Royal Portuguese Navy officers sword, once belonging to the last King of Portugal, Manuel II (1889-1932). Of usual form, featuring a fish skin grip (lacking wire binding), gilt brass guard with fouled anchor and crown, gilt brass backpiece leading up to a lions head pommel. Fold down catch to the guard to secure the blade into the scabbard, with raised button to the throat area of the scabbard. Steel single edged quill point blade and piped back, with gilded detail to both sides, plus an etched fouled anchor and crown, a fully rigged sailing ship, foliate patterns, and a black cartouche for adding a name. Complete with its black leather scabbard, with gilt brass throat, mid section, and chape, with the throat and mid section having suspension rings to attach to a sword belt. There is additionally an original bullion sword knot attached to the upper suspension ring, plus a 1911 dated photograph of King Manuel II, dedicated to ‘Antonio Pereira’ and signed ‘Manuel R’. The date of April 30th 1911, and the location of ‘Richmond’ quoted on the photograph would indicate that this was presented after the King had fled into exile. He is dressed in the uniform of a naval officer, and is pictured with the actual naval officer’s sword offered in this lot, albeit with a slightly different sword knot shown in the photograph. Provenance: the piece was originally acquired by Joaquim Pereira (who was formally known as Antonio), who began his service with the Portuguese Monarch, King Carlos I (1863-1908) in the late 19th century. In 1908 King Carlos was assassinated while travelling by carriage, with shots being fired from undergrowth by the Republican activists, Alfredo Luis da Costa, and Manuel Buica. The heir apparent, Luis Filipe, Prince of Portugal, Duke of Braganza was mortally wounded, with the future King Manuel being shot in the arm. Manuel’s reign lasted less than 3 years, and was overthrown during a military coup, after which the Portuguese First Republic was established. King Manuel II fled into exile, later settling in Fullwell Park in Twickenham, Middlesex, where he was to die aged 42 on July 2nd 1932. Joaquim Pereira was still in the service of the monarchy at the time of the King’s death in 1932, and he was given the opportunity to collect a number of the King’s belongings, one of which was this naval sword. There were numerous other pieces, including furniture that were stored at Fullwell Park, but they were lost during a flooding of the cellar they were stored in. The naval sword and other items have been passed down through the paternal line of the Pereira family, with Joaquim’s great-grandson being the present owner. Approximate length in scabbard 93cm, blade length 77.2cm. Condition: generally solid, with some age and service wear. The gilt finish has mostly worn away to the brass, with traces remaining in places. The blade has some mottling and some small areas of surface corrosion. The fish skin grip is intact, but the wire binding is absent. The leather to the scabbard is intact, but each of the brass mounts are missing their securing pins, and therefore will move. The photograph has some losses to the card mount, plus some light staining along the bottom edge.

Lot 266

PLEASE NOTE LEGAL DISCLAIMER FOLLOWING THIS DESCRIPTION.  An unusual and collectible cased Charles Lancaster double barrel hammer breech-loading shotgun in 28bore No. 3417 at overall length 45” with 30½” barrels. Its number indicates that this gun was originally made circa 1861/62 by Charles Lancaster as a patent smooth bored rotary underlever double rifles utilising his patent “oval bore non fouling rifling” in 41bore (.480”)and has been converted subsequently to a shotgun. It has nicely patterned fine twist barrels to a smooth brown patination with 2½” chambers and some choke to both. There is some pitting to both barrels Original London proof marks visible with Lancaster own “CL” mark and serial nos. on flats Barrels are engraved “CHARLES LANCASTER 151 NEW BOND STREET LONDON” and “PATENT SMOOTH BORED BREECH LOADING RIFLE” The slightly rounded top rib still has the filled wedged slots for lateral adjustment of the original rifle rear and fore-sights but a shotgun bead foresight appears to have been fitted on conversion and which is missing. Locks are back-action non-rebounding with slightly offset long “rabbit eared” hammers having ½ and full cock positions and external sliding stalking safeties and double triggers. The “ears” of both hammers have both broken off possibly due to effect of leverage on their length and/or accidentally forcing them against the safety. The r/h hammer shows an old brazed repair and the broken l/h ear which is more recent is with the gun. Opening is by an interesting version of Jones type rotary underlever which operates through a cam to slide the barrels forward approx. 1/8” on initial opening to clear the firing pins. Locks, rounded standing breech and fences profusely engraved with foliate scrollwork and locks marked “CHARLES LANCASTER’S PATENT” It appears that there may be a No. “1” amongst the decoration on the top strap but there is no evidence of a second gun and it is in a purpose-made single case of original design. Wood appears walnut to a dark brown patination with crisp chequering at the wrist and fore-end and butt is fitted with chequered metal butt plate. The gun is contained in what is reputed to be its original wood and brass case green beize lined with various compartments for accessories non of which remain. A complete Charles Lancaster trade label with some signs of wear and slight damage to one corner is attached inside the lid. In need of careful restoration but a really interesting piece of history as a project. Whilst the original rifle would now be in an obsolete calibre the shotgun conversion is a S2 firearm and BUYER MUST BE A RFD OR HOLD A CURRENT VALID SHOTGUN CERTIFICATE. With narrow tab and nickel buckle fitting to the reverse side. Handwritten detail to the linen lining, stating that it is for ‘Basingstoke Volunteer Training Corps’, with it also having its former owner name ‘L.C. Whetham’ of the ‘No 1 Section Comm’. Notes: published records of its former owner are sparse, but there is a pension record for a Captain L.C.Whetham of the IA TC (Indian Army Training Corps), with his address being listed as Daneshill Cottage, Basingstoke, Hampshire. The medal rolls also confirm that a 2.Lieut L.C.Whetham was entitled to the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal, with the medals being issued by the Indian Office. Lewis Charles Whetham was born in circa 1877 and died in 1963. Approximately 17cm c 13cm. Condition: generally very good. Some light soiling to the inside from wear, and a little wear to the nap of the cloth from use. Tiny moth nip to the right of the letter R. Some light surface corrosion to the buckle.

Lot 8

A WW1 casualty medal pair, scroll, and emotive 1918 handwritten letters, awarded to 82858 Pte Tom Williams Green of the 25th Battalion King’s Liverpool Regiment. To include: the British War Medal, and Victory Medal (mounted as a pair), an additional Victory Medal named to the same man, and a framed and glazed memorial scroll name to Tom Williams Green. Additionally there are several letters, written to Pte Green’s widow, 2 of which tragically confirm the death of Tom. One letter dated October 3rd 1918 is written by 97323 Pte H.Jones of the 25th King’s Liverpool Regiment. He writes ‘Mrs Green, I am very sorry to inform you that your husband has been killed while I was walking over a field. I noticed your husband laying dead and all I could do was to take out his pay book, and other things which I handed over to our orderly for which they will be forwarded over to you’. Another letter written to Mrs Green, from 2nd Lt W.M.Robertson (dated October 24th 1918), states that he was Pte Green’s Platoon Commander when he was wounded, but ‘owing to the barrage lifting I was unable to stay beside him. He fell wounded by my side and I can assure you he was not dead and no official world has come about him to date’. He goes on to add ‘I cannot find the person who wrote and told you he was killed, but if I should find him I will see that he is punished’. A third letter, written by the Rev C.P.Thomas Chaplain 1/5th London Field Ambulance, dated November 3rd 1918 appears to confirm Pte Green’s death in action on October 2nd 1918. There are also some letters of correspondence between Pte Green’s son (Captain T.E.Green) with regards to a visit to his memorial at Loos, and in that regard there is also a black and white photograph of his name on the memorial. Notes: Tom William Green was born Bruton, Somerset, but at the time of his death he was a resident of Shepherd’s Bush in London. Published records states that Pte Green was formerly of the London Regiment, using the service number 801452. His medal entitlement is confirmed as being the pair only, and the whereabouts of his memorial plaque is unknown. The pair mounted on a bar would appear to be late issue, in this instance very late indeed, with his Medal Index Card being stamped for June 29th 1982, some 64 years after his death. Both of these medals are marked with a small R to the rim. The additional Victory Medal would have been to original period issue. The circumstances surrounding how the originals became lost is unknown, but it’s assumed that his son made the application to the medal office.

Lot 23

August 1919’s Army List shows him as serving with a South Staffordshire Service Battalion. The medal pair are confirmed as his full entitlement. Condition: good. Some normal age related toning to the medals, with just a little polishing to the high points of the design. Some very minor wear to the silk ribbons.
