A pair of Victorian silver domed vegetable dish covers, mark of R. & S. Garrard & Co., London 1858, of circular panelled form, upper with repoussé scrolls and foliage over a textured ground, lower with the arms of Frederick William, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, together with the Cypher of H.R.H. Princess Augusta of Cambridge, Duchess of Cambridge, finial modelled as a crown on a tasselled cushion, 24cm diameter at the base, 15cm high, 56.7ozt grossProvenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)Given the date of hallmarking, these were most probably in the possession of HRH Princess Augusta of Cambridge, Duchess of Cambridge (1797 - 1889). She was born as Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa of Hesse-Kassel, the third daughter of Prince Frederick of Hesse-Kassel, and his wife, Princess Caroline of Nassau-Usingen. Augusta married her second cousin, HRH Prince Adolphus Frederick, Duke of Cambridge (1774 - 1850) twice, firstly at Kassel on 7th May and secondly at Buckingham Palace on 1st June 1818. Adolphus was the tenth child and seventh son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. It is believed that Augusta acquired these vegetable dishes during her widowhood and commissioned her cypher ‘AC’ (Augusta Cambridge) to be engraved, ensigned by the Royal coronet of a son of the Sovereign, as was her right as a wife/widow of a son of the Sovereign. Thereafter, these dishes came into the household of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, most possibly as a wedding gift upon the marriage of Adolphus and Augusta’s eldest daughter, HRH Princess Augusta Caroline of Cambridge (1822 - 1916) to Frederick William, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1819 - 1904) and were engraved thereafter with the arms of the Grand Duchy. Augusta and Frederick were married at Buckingham Palace on 28th June 1843.

British Victorian Boer War Campaign Medal Royal West Kent Regiment, medal with three clasps Cape Colony, Transvaal and Wittebergen, awarded to “4314 PTE C HOLMES 2ND RL W KENT R”. Medal remains in good condition. Charles Thomas Holmes was born in Canterbury Kent, he enlisted in Maidstone. Served in India and was awarded the Indian General Service medal along with the Kings South Africa medal.
WW2 German Afrikakorps 2nd Pattern Pith (Sun) Helmet, good example of the olive felt tropical sun helmet with metal army and national tri-colour decals. Olive green leather covering to the brim of the helmet. Original top vent fitting. Green leather chinstrap. Interior with tan leather sweatband stamped with makers details ‘R & M WEGENER BLITZENROD’. To the underside of the sweatband is stamped with size number 58 and dated 1942. Generally good example.
AFTER GIOVANNI BATTISTA BOAZIO (BAPTISTA BOAZIO) (fl. 1588-1606) 'Irelande' a highly decorative map of Ireland, with dedication to “my Gratious Soveraigne Elizabeth by the grace of God, of Englande, Fraunce and Irelande Queene Defendresse of the true Christian Faith", 52cm x 82cmUndoubtedly an example of accomplished craftsmanship, its lavish ornamental flourish, the purely fictional character of some of the map’s topographical details and the extravagant use of colour, are all features that suggest that precise geographical information was not the map’s principal objective. Both Boazio, the cartographer, and Elstrack, his engraver, are doubly present on the map: while two cartouches bearing their names signal directly their claim to authorship, a more imaginative but deeply colonial gesture transforms them into the toponyms Baptiste’s Rock (off the Antrim Coast) and Elstrake’s Isle (south-west of Tyrconnell). This inventive way of writing cartographer and engraver into Ireland’s geography has led one commentator to suggest that the map “is not a good one, even by contemporary standards: obsolete before it was published . . . its geographical content is badly garbled and in places totally fictitious.” Such a view, though factually correct, implicitly assumes that the gradual increase of cartographic accuracy should be seen as the guiding principle of map history. But what makes Boazio’s map such an important example of the way 16th century Englishmen made spatial sense of the intractable and “barbarous” Irish territory is precisely its value as a decorative image of Ireland’s geography fluctuating between fact and fiction. Its purpose was not accuracy but opulent display. Boazio’s and Elstrack’s names function as a kind of geographical signature, an eccentric gesture perhaps, but one that capitalises on Ireland’s status as the property of those that give it visual and verbal presence in maps and texts.
