The refinishing has reduced the thickness of the engraved border lines in places and the engraved name and marks are not as deep as they should be. The marks however are very clear and have not been rubbed away. The grips look to be original finish and in good order. The action works well and indexes as it should do. A GEORGE I GILTWOOD AND GILT-GESSO GIRANDOLE MIRROR Early 18th century, in the manner of James Moore, perhaps supplied by Gerrit Jensen. The lower rectangular bevelled plate surmounted by a shaped bevelled plate in a scrolled gadrooned frame, surmounted by Prince-of-Wales feathers between confronted masks emerging from foliage, the apron centred by a shell between brass candle-sockets, 160 x 90 cm. The mirror is closely related to mirrors supplied by Gerrit Jensen (though in all likelihood made in another workshop) for Palace furnishings during the reign of George I. At the accession of George I, Elector of Hanover, in 1714, his son George Augustus, became Prince of Wales. With his father and his two female companions, George, Prince of Wales and his wife, Caroline of Ansbach, Princess of Wales, occupied the royal residences of St James's Palace and Hampton Court Palace and therefore required new, distinctive furnishings - no doubt emblazoned with the badge of the Prince of Wales: three ostrich feathers. There was a requirement for new furnishings as the principal royal residence of Whitehall Palace was largely destroyed by fire in 1698, and therefore the entire court required to live in cramped and inadequate conditions at St James's, the junior - or nursery - metropolitan palace. Furthermore the previous Prince of Wales, James Stuart the 'Old Pretender', son of James II, was a mere 6 months of age when his father left Britain. And there had not been a Princess of Wales since Catherine of Aragon, when she was briefly married to Prince Arthur 1501-2. If the Prince of Wales feathers are original, this mirror could have been made for George, Prince of Wales, or for Caroline, Princess of Wales, for one of the private or state apartments at St James's Palace,. Alternatively, it could have been a commission after the Prince was expelled from his father's court in 1720, after which the Prince and Princess of Wales lived in Leicester House (today the site of Leicester Square). Large quantities of new furniture was commissioned by the Great Wardrobe to furnish St James's (and elsewhere - but especially at St James's) and yet no individual piece of furniture from that scheme remains in the Royal Collection today. This may seem at odds with today's antiquarian sensibilities, but can be explained through the requirement to regularly replace and update furnishings according to fashion and also changes in room or apartment use. Additionally, at the death of a monarch, the furnishings of specific rooms in the royal apartments were claimed as 'perquisities' by certain courtiers, according to rank (see R. Bird. 'The Furniture and Furnishing of St James's 1714-1715', Furniture History, 2014, pp. 180-186).A similar mirror, attributed to John Belchier, which is close in design to a pier glass (2-4m high) at Erddig, Wrexham (NT 1146960), was sold at Christie's London, 23rd July 2020, lot 157.
GIOVANNI BATTISTA BOAZIO (BAPTISTA BOAZIO) (fl. 1588-1606) 'Irelande' a highly decorative map of Ireland, circa 1599, with dedication to "my Gratious Soveraigne Elizabeth by the grace of God, of Englande, Fraunce and Irelande Queene Defendresse of the true Christian Faith", 52cm x 82cm. Undoubtedly an example of accomplished craftsmanship, its lavish ornamental flourish, the purely fictional character of some of the map's topographical details and the extravagant use of colour, are all features that suggest that precise geographical information was not the map's principal objective. Both Boazio, the cartographer, and Elstrack, his engraver, are doubly present on the map: while two cartouches bearing their names signal directly their claim to authorship, a more imaginative but deeply colonial gesture transforms them into the toponyms Baptiste's Rock (off the Antrim Coast) and Elstrake's Isle (south-west of Tyrconnell). This inventive way of writing cartographer and engraver into Ireland's geography has led one commentator to suggest that the map "is not a good one, even by contemporary standards: obsolete before it was published . . . its geographical content is badly garbled and in places totally fictitious." Such a view, though factually correct, implicitly assumes that the gradual increase of cartographic accuracy should be seen as the guiding principle of map history. But what makes Boazio's map such an important example of the way 16th century Englishmen made spatial sense of the intractable and "barbarous" Irish territory is precisely its value as a decorative image of Ireland's geography fluctuating between fact and fiction. Its purpose was not accuracy but opulent display. Boazio's and Elstrack's names function as a kind of geographical signature, an eccentric gesture perhaps, but one that capitalises on Ireland's status as the property of those that give it visual and verbal presence in maps and texts. See Boazio, Baptista, and R. Dunlop, “Sixteenth-Century Maps of Ireland.”, The English Historical Review, no. 78 (1905): 309–37.
