KIA 5.10.16 during the attack by the 8th/Bn on the Schwaben Redoubt. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. It is possible this award is a retrospective MM for Loos?, however it is far more likely to be for the Somme. The 8/Bn were in action on July 1st at Montanban. Born Norwich.

Unusual group to a WW2 RAF Driver, Mr R C Searle of New Park Road, London. During his career he drove Arthur T. Harris, and Lieut Gen Ira C. Eaker 8th USAF. Lot includes, hand signed photos of Harris and Eaker, post-war letters from Lieut Gen Eaker, other ephemera, and late issue 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence & War Medals. Knife: A scarce WW2 fighting knife by Cogswell & Harrison the London Gunsmiths (see R. Flook The F.S knife page 181) Blade 5.5" S shaped crossguard, stiletto blade ricasso etched 'Cogswell & Harrison Ltd. 168 Piccadilly' & 'London England'. Plain wood grip. In its original shaped leather scabbard (retaining loop with leather split). The whole in excellent condition. A collectors lot.
Distinguished Service Medal: An extremely rare D.S.M. awarded to Captain Richard Langmaid Mercantile Marine. One of only TWO DSMs awarded to ships captains during WW1. *Awarded the DSM and not the DSC because he did not hold a master's ticket. Langmaid's DSM is correctly impressed 'CAPT R. LANGMAID M.M. ATLANTIC. 28th APRIL 1918'. On this day Langmaid was at the wheel of the S.V. 'ALERT' with a cargo of coal and salt on route from Runcorn to Par in Cornwall. Near Pendeen Bristol Channel the 'Alert' was engaged in a gun battle with an enemy submarine. After a near miss the submarine disappeared. Langmead was awarded the DSM for beating off the submarine in a 'cool & gallant manner' A rare piece for the Mercantile Marine collector. With service details and interesting article re the award.

Medals QSA with bars CC/Rhodesia, BWM & Victory Medal, 1935 Jubilee Medal and 1937 Coronation Medal. Percy Henry Guy Feilden lived at Copethorpe, Witney. 1915 Star Trio to 2172 Pte (Sgt on Pair) Lionel Seymour Collins (24th Sportsman's) R.Fusiliers. Trans to RFC as a Sergt Pilot No 28689, and Commissioned 16/12/1917 Lieut RAF. Lived Tavistock Drive, Mapperley, Notts. Prior to WW1 he was a Motor Cycle Racer at Brooklands. He then obtained a Pilots Certificate at Bristol Flying School 15th August 1914. Served with 136 & 108 Squadrons. Contacted Pleurisy whilst flying, discharged 21/5/1918. Lot also includes WW2 group to his son Major W L Collins R. Fus of Chesterton Road, Cambridge. Medals - 1939-45 Star, Defence & War Medals, plus ID Tag.
