Perhaps you and Mr. Webb will make a short communication on it to the R. Astronomical Society. The circumstance that Aquilae is a standard star at the R. Observatory is in itself rather adverse to the discovery of any small companion to it; because, though often observed, it is always observed in an illuminated field", folds, several removed from album ff. 1907 (May 22) Cover from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur bearing 4c surcharge on Labuan 18c, the overprint 13½mm high (the usual overprint setting being 21mm), the stamp ringed and disallowed with the Singapore c.d.s and triangular framed "T" to the left, charged 6c postage due, arrival backstamp. A rare stamp and cover, this narrow setting surcharge (possibly a postally used essay?) not recorded by Gibbons, the cover sent by F.A.S McCulland (then Resident in Brunei, who acquired the Brunei 1c black overprint error sheet, using many on covers to himself), central fold and piece torn from upper edge but very unusual. Another example of this narrow surcharge, used on a 1907 cover from Labuan, is recorded in an accompanying 1920 article by Major R. Lockhart. Ex Dr. F.E. Wood. Photo on Page 150.
Charles II. 1666 (July 3) Entire letter from Lord Arlington addressed "To our Right Trusty and Wellbeloved Cousin Horatio Lord Townshend Our Lieutnt of Our City & County of Norwich, July 3·66", giving instructions to raise three regiments of horse due to a fear of a landing by our enemies in some part of the Kingdom, the top of the letter signed "Charles R" by King Charles II, with a fine paper covered royal seal. A fine and scarce letter sent during the Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-67, signed by the King. Photo on Page 22.
1891 "2" on 3c Reply card (outward half), very large surcharge in red, registered from Penang to Capt P. Nelson in Scotland franked 5c, cancelled by oval of bars with boxed "PENANG / 19 NOV 91 / R" registration handstamp and London Registered arrival datestamp (Dec 14), message on reverse written by P.J Nelson, Assistant Postmaster General of the Straits. Horizontal fold near base and vertical fold at left but very rare, this "2" surcharge recorded on just one other unused 3c postcard. With B.P.A Certificate (1986). Photo on Page 180.

1897-1960 Ephemera, postcards and photos including Colonial Reports for 1897, 1899, 1901 and 1903; 1929 picture postcards depicting the barrel dropped from S.S "Ormonde" (6); 1902 1/10r and ¼r currency notes; photos from the 1931 visit of H.M.S "Iroquois" (11); 1945-46 photos mostly showing the R.A.F on the island (18); 1945-46 Forces newspapers "Atoll" (3, one announcing the Japanese Surrender, another special souvenir edition with 60+ signatures of officers & men on the reverse) or "Cocos Contact", etc. (c.50).
1877 (May) Newspaper wrapper to England "per mail steamer Caldera", franked at the 1d newspaper rate, the 1d stamp (S.G. 21) with light cancel, red "1", reverse inscribed by the recipient "R. 4 June 1877 ex. Caldera, from G.H.H Broadway, the St. Helena Guardian". Minor staining and vertical fold at left but scarce, very few 1d printed matter rate items surviving. Photo on Page 230.
Upper Silesia. 1921 Covers and cards comprising Aug. 19th cover franked G.B ½d + 1½d cancelled "ARMY POST OFFICE / S.120" (used at Oppeln, Upper Silesia, Jan. 1921 - April 1922); stampless postcard from a French soldier at Oppeln to USA with "TRESOR ET POSTES" c.d.s and violet "Commission Interalliee / de Gouvernement et de Plebiscite / de Haute-Silesia / DEPARTMENT MILITAIRE (S.P 184)" (corner creases); postcard from G.B to "Pte R. Warner, Middlesex Regt., A.P.O S64, British Forces, Upper Silesia"; and a postcard from Kochtschutz with Upper Silesia stamps, probably from a British soldier. (4).
Post Offices in China. 1919 10c Size H registration envelope overprinted "CHINA", sent by H.B.M Consul-General at Canton to London, insured for 3,000 francs. Franked by P.O in China 6c, 10c and five 50c stamps (paying 16c postage + 10c registration + $2.50 insurance fee) each cancelled by "CANTON / B" c.d.s, with boxed "R / CANTON B.P.O / No", endorsed "O.H.M.S" and bearing two differing "INSURED" labels, red wax seals impressed "H.B.M CONSULATE / CANTON". A rare and exceptionally fine Insured use of this registration envelope. Photo on Page 90.
Receiving Houses. 1861-c.1880 Covers with Receiving House datestamps including single ring cancels "PESHAWAR CITY RECG HOUSE" (2, one registered) or "KURRANCHE R. RECG HOUSE", double ring "BOREE BUNDER / R.H" (2), "KURRACHEE RECG HOUSE" number "2" duplex on a registered cover, "MADRAS / R.H No. 3" datestamp on 1861 cover bearing ½a pair cancelled by rhomboid of dots, etc., a few faults. 1912-24 ½d - 1/- Royal Cypher Dandy Roll varieties, virtually all in mounted mint pairs, with missing crown, missing "G", missing "R" and broken letter watermark varieties, comprising pairs (with a few blocks or singles) of the ½d (7), 1d (8), 1½d (5), 2d (9), 2½d (4), 3d (5), 4d (6), 5d (3), 6d (3), 7d, 9d agate (4), 10d (4), 1/- (5), includes 1d vertical strip of four watermark "OSTAGE", 9d agate block of four with missing crown and GR, etc., many scarce and very under catalogued varieties. 1911 (Feb 18) Allahabad First Aerial Post, registered cover to Bombay franked KEVII 1r tied by the special pictorial Aerial Post handstamp in magenta with a second strike on the front, reverse with a registration label bearing boxed "R / ALLAHABAD" and datestamps of Allahabad and Bombay. Fine and a scarce high franking, additional strikes of the Aerial Post handstamp usually only applied to privileged mail items with the handstamp in black and to highly franked covers bearing rupee value stamps.
