'Most of Ware's designs were as Palladian in character as might be expected from an architect of his background and credentials. However, as a prominent member of the St Martin's Lane Academy he was also a colleague of such rococo artists as Hogarth, Roubiliac, and Francis Hayman: this is reflected not only in the surprisingly latitudinarian views occasionally found in the pages of the Complete Body but also in the dazzling interiors of his most important work, Chesterfield House, Mayfair (1748?9; dem. 1934), designed in a full-blooded French rococo idiom for the francophile fourth Earl of Chesterfield.' The plates were irregularly numbered 1-122, with numbers 38,43, 44, 46, 97, 100, 108 & 109 omitted (Harris).

The ceremony, which was celebrated on Whit Tuesday, was to raise funds - by donation - for the senior scholar leaving Eton for University. The Montem was initially an initiation ceremony for new pupils and evolved into a somewhat exuberant and rowdy event, with dubious behaviour on the part of the pupils and the spectators. Etonians processed in elaborate ceremonial and military dress from the College to Salt Hill in Slough. Huge crowds flocked to see the procession, hoping to glimpse attending royalty and participate by giving money in exchange for a pinch of salt or, later, a paper ticket. The poor behaviour resulted in the procession being permanently cancelled in 1844.

Many of these works formed series, such as the Four Seasons, or the Twelve Months. Reine de Bertier de Sauvigny writes that our work was probably a pair with a depiction of Winter (op.cit. p.289, no.11). Grimmer’s work demonstrates the influence his father Jacob, and that of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. However, Abel’s work is highly personal and distinctive, showing a stylisation of nature and architecture, combined with a perceptive and individualised rendering of rural life.

She died suddenly on 17th June 1800 “after a few hours illness only” (Milton Church, Cambridge). Knight was one of Thomas Lawrence's earliest patrons. In 1777, when Lawrence was only eight years old, he drew a miniature of Knight's neighbour Charles Pepys, and the drawing remains in the Knight family collection (see Garlick, 1964, p.240). Garlick records that Lawrence's portrait of Elizabeth was unfinished, and the present work was clearly completed by a later hand.
