TWO CHINESE BRONZE FIGURES OF LU DONGBIN LATE MING/QING DYNASTY Both standing, wearing headdresses with long ribbons and flowing robes, with small gourds fastened by their sides. One figure bearded, supported on an integral stand with lingzhi and stylised waves, holding a small ball in his right hand, the other with red cold painted details, together with a wood stand, 26.5cm. (3) Cf. R Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, pp.80-85 no.64 and also M Maucuer, Bronzes de la Chine impériale des Song aux Qing, p.156, no.108 for similar figures. Lü Dongbin is one of the Eight Immortals honoured as a great poet and swordsman.
*A CHINESE BLUE-BLACK GROUND SILK SUIT OF CEREMONIAL ARMOUR AND HELMET OF A GENERAL QING DYNASTY In dark blue-black satin with gilt copper studs and lined with cotton padding and pale-blue silk, comprising: a jacket and apron, detachable sleeves, shoulder epaulettes and accessories, together with a parcel-gilt and iron helmet adorned with gold dragons, borders of ruyi-heads and set with coral and surmounted by a tall fur plume and a gilt metal reticulated finial, the jacket and skirt 150cm approx. Provenance: formerly the collection of Miss Diana Kearny Powell, Washington, who inherited the suit from her father Col. William Glasgow Powell, USMC (1871-1955), who participated in the relief of Peking in 1900. Cf. A George III silver pap boat D & R Hennell, London possibly 1790, with shell, 'c' scroll and punched edge, 11.5cm wide, 2ozs and a George III silver helmet shape cream jug, marks unclear, probably London 1781, bright cut foliate engraved, bead borders, monogrammed in a cartouche, on a square plinth base, 15cm high, loaded (2).
