A late Vic officer’s sword of The R Artillery, almost straight, fullered blade 36½” by Henry Wilkinson, no 38196 (for 1900) on backstrap, etched with crowned R Arms, Union wreath, “Unique” scroll, winged lightning and “Royal Artillery” within scrolled geometric panels, Wilkinsons patent steel hilt with wirebound diced leather grips, stepped pommel, diced backstrap, in its leather FS scabbard. Basically GC (blade some wear and dark pitting, dark rust patina to hilt)

A Geo V 1897 pattern infantry officer’s sword, straight, fullered blade, 32½”, etched with crowned R Arms, GVR cypher and wreath within frosted scrolled geometric panels, regulation pierced plated hilt incorporating crowned GVR cypher, pommel and diced backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its leather FS scabbard with WM throat. GC, the blade retaining much original polish, (one or two rust spots, a little bubbling to hilt plating)

A 1796 pattern heavy cavalry trooper’s sword of the 2nd or R North British Dragoons, broad, shallow fullered blade 35”, with hatchet point, marked Osborn on backstrap, stamps (faint) at forte, regulation steel hilt with pierced and reinforced guard, long langets, plain backstrap with ears, marked 2nd Ds/D/77 on front of knucklebow, plain wooden grip (replaced), in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. GC for age (some wear and pitting, hilt painted black). Plate 9

Lot 1011

Four: 1914-15 star, (5-1940 Pte J W (corrected) Bourne R Sussex R), BWM and Victory (119653 Gnr J W Bourne RA), Defence medal (un-named as issued) VF. Together with approx 240 letters, field service postcards etc from recipient to family members back home, many with “field post office” and “passed by censor” stamps. Note: James Bourne volunteered for the Cinque Ports Bttn 5th Royal Sussex. In Feb 1915 he joined A Company in France. In March he received wounds to the leg and foot at Festubert. A period of convalescence in England followed. On 21st July 1915 he obtained a commission with the 2/5th S Staffs Regt and in October left again for France as 2nd Lieut. In January 1916 he went to Egypt with the regiment but fell out with the Colonel. In February the regiment returned to France. He then resigned his commission in April. When conscription was introduced he rejoined the army as a gunner RGA. In February 1917 he was again sent to France for service. After promotion to Bombardier in May he fell ill in June with Rheumatic Fever and Angina. Again he was sent back for convalescence but was finally posted to France again with506 Siege Battery. The complete collection of letters have been typewritten by the vendor and make interesting reading.
