Dated 1763 AD. Obv: profile bust with GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA legend. Rev: cruciform arms with M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E legend and date. S.3742; ESC 1214. 5.95 grams. Known as the Northumberland shilling as the Earl of Northumberland had them struck and distributed £100 of them (= 2,000 coins) in Dublin on his appointment as Lord Lieutenant. Near extremely fine. Scarce.
1542-1558 AD. First period, class VIci. Obv: crowned thistle with initials M - R at sides and MARIA D G SCOTORVM legend. Rev: saltire cross through crown with cinquefoil at sides and OPPIDVM EDINBVRGI legend for Edinburgh mint. A silver flügelfibel bow brooch with with D-section bow and annular insert with four knops to the outer face and two more at the base; the footplate a flat-section trapezoidal plaque with pierced tracery and punched holes; eight-coil spring with external chord, pin to the rear. Cf. Hattatt, R. Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987, item 765 and fig.14(f). 27 grams, 92mm (3 3/4"). Property of a London collector, acquired before 1980. The present example is a developed form in which the original pairs of opposed bird figures have been simplified to raised knops. Fine condition. Rare.

A silver bow brooch of Kräftig Profilierte type with carinated bow and footplate, bulb terminal with knop, band of transverse ribbing to the headplate and apex, lateral arms with knop finials; spring, pin and catchplate to the reverse. A mixed group of Romano-British plate brooches and a mount comprising: a shoe-shaped brooch with blue enamel panel and white studs, pin, pin-lugs and catchplate to the reverse; an elliptical brooch with concentric enamelled panels, pin, pin-lugs and catchplate to the reverse; a lozengiform mount with trefoils to the angles, central void, blue and white enamel fill with reserved panels in contrasting colour, two T-shaped lugs to the reverse. 5th-6th century AD. A gilt-bronze button brooch with the face in the half-round and the surrounding flange reduced to a thick border; catchplate and pin-lug to the reverse. Cf. Avent, R. & Evison, V.I. Anglo-Saxon Button Brooches in Archaeologia, vol.CVII, 1982, plate XVIII, item 40.1. 3.07 grams, 16mm (3/4"). Found Yorkshire, UK. The narrow flange is present on a handful of such brooches; the present item most resembles the example from Blandford published by Avent and Evison. The helmetted face is clearly visible but the lack of the dished flange has allowed the surface to wear more than is usual; the gilding is substantially intact. Very fine condition. Excessively rare.
10th-5th century BC. A bronze finger ring formed as a square-section rod in a tapering tubular coil with large perpendicular spiral plaque. Cf. MacGregor, A. (ed.) Antiquities from Europe and the Near East in the Collection of Lord MacAlpine of West Green, Oxford, 1987, item 8.7 for an arm-ring formed in a similar manner. 23 grams, 56mm overall, 16.00 x 18.92mm internal diameter (approximate size British R 1/2, USA 8 3/4, Europe 19.38, Japan 18) (2 1/4"). A D-section cast miniature brooch with s-shaped body, scaphoid head joined at the chin and similar tail; enamel panels to the tail, ear, head, and the body with a panel of polychrome enamel ornament. Cf. Hattatt, R. Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts, Oxford, 1989, item 1655. 12 grams, 49mm (2"). Found East Yorkshire, UK. The 'dragonesque' brooch is typically Romano-British and first appeared after the start of the Roman conquest of southern England in 43 AD, but embodying native artistic taste. Fine condition; tail detached.

A bronze mount formed as a male bust with hanks of curled hair above a facing mask with lentoid eyes, triangular nose and slit mouth, raised chevron plaque to the chest; hollow to the reverse, mounted on a custom-made stand.
