A c.18th century embroidered band sampler,by Catherine Annan, the linen ground worked in polychrome wool in predominantly cross hem with alphabet, and decorative motifs, label to reverse reads 'Sampler made by Great Grandmother Catherine Annan, wife of Rev James Bryce of Killaig Co', Scotland, date about 1770, andan embroidered sampler possibly 18th century, unnamed, the linen ground worked in with polychrome wool in predominately cross stitch and Algerian eye with narrow alphabet and numeral bands and decorative tree motif, label to the reverse reads 'Given to me by R C Green September 1927' (2)James Bryce LLD FRSE was a famed naturalist and geologist and was the third son of Rev James Bryce (1767-1857) and of Catherine Annan of Auchtermuchty in Fife, to whom this sampler was attributed.
