Chinese Art A gilt bronze crowned Cacravartin Buddha China, Qing dynasty, 18th century (?). . Cm 17,00 x 24,50 x 12,00. A large gilt bronze figure depicting the crowned Buddha, seated legs crossed in dhyanasana and wearing a rich robe. The figure is refined by soft and slender lines and depicts the image of the Buddha in its glorious manifestation of Cacravartin, the universal monarch. The interest shown by the Qing emperors in Tibetan Buddhism gave rise to the rapid expansion of Buddhist temples in the territories they ruled, particularly during the reign of the Qianlong emperor (r.1735-95). The need to provide devotional sculptures to these new temples is the main reason for the flourishing of the famous manufacturing centers in Inner Mongolia.
