Manner of Isaac Sailmaker, a state ship and other vessels off Sheerness, oil on canvas, 77.5 x 105 cm Provenance: Purchased from Messrs Christie, Manson & Woods, King Street, Monday December 7th 1925, lot 154 W Van De Velde, Men-O'-War and other Shipping off a Fort, the Property of Colonel R C Goff, deceased, late of Hove, Sussex, thence by descent See full cover colour illustration Condition report Report by RB Previously re-lined. There is a small area of paint loss in one of the clouds, between the two principal boats, above the long pennant and to the left of the small group of birds. We use a professional photographer to take our principal images, and he has certainly lit this picture very well. You should see the difference in the images between the photographs we have taken and the ones he has taken, as his blue sky is considerably lighter than our blue sky, with the picture in reality not being as light and bright as he has managed to show it. In all probability a late 17th or possibly early 18th century painting rather than being a later copy.
A late Victorian walnut pedestal desk, the leatherette inset top above an arrangement of nine drawers, 122 cm wide See illustration Condition report Report by NG Top sun bleached and faded. Wood dry with several splits, insert top worn. General knocks and bumps with some losses to veneer. Each lock stamped with V R crown monogram but no key present.
