SHERIDAN RICHARD BRINSLEY: (1751-1816) Irish Satirist, Playwright & Poet, owner of the London Theatre Royal on Drury Lane. D.S., R B Sheridan, one page, folio, n.p. (London), 12th December 1808. The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is a bond of payment between Sheridan and Richard Peake of Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square, in the Parish of Saint Pancras for the sum of one thousand four hundred pounds to be repaid in two instalments of seven hundred pounds with interest. Signed by Sheridan at the foot alongside a plain affixed seal and countersigned by the witness Henry Burgess of Curzon Street, Mayfair. With blank integral leaf (neatly detached). Some extremely light, very minor age wear, otherwise VG Richard Peake was employed in the Treasury Office of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and was a close friend of Sheridan. Peake's son, Richard Brinsley Peake (1792-1847) was named after the playwright and went on to have his own career as a dramatist. He is today best remembered for his play Presumption; or, the Fate of Frankenstein (1823) which was based on Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. It was Peake, and not Shelley, who wrote the famous line “It lives!”. Upon his death in 1847 Peake's family inherited his numerous debts and were left in financial distress.

ROSE ALEC: (1908-1991) English Sailor who participated in the second single-handed Atlantic race in 1964 and circumnavigated the globe single-handedly in 1967-68. A turquoise woolen knit cap with a yellow stripe around the base and yellow 'bobble' on the top, being the knit cap worn by Rose during his round the world voyage on Lively Lady. Accompanied by an A.L.S., Alec R Rose, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Mr. Howard, stating, in part, 'It was nice to meet you at Lymington and to see you had my woolley hat. This hat I was wearing constantly during my round the world voyage, and was wearing it on my return to Southsea'. Also including a book signed, being a hardback edition of My Lively Lady, First Standard Edition published by the Nautical Publishing Company in association with George G. Harrap & Company Ltd., Lymington & London, 1968. Signed and dated by Rose to the title page. Accompanied by the dustjacket, and further including an unsigned 5 x 6.5 photograph of Rose standing in a three quarter length pose. The knit cap is a little faded and frayed, particularly at the top where the 'bobble' has become loose, the letter and photograph are both laid down and the former has some wrinkling and staining, affecting the text and signature (which remain legible), the book is in fine condition. NATAL: An excellent selection of A.Ls.S., a few Ds.S. etc., by various Governors, Prime Ministers and other officials related to Natal comprising Henry McCallum (1852-1919, English Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1901-07; A.L.S. on the printed stationery of Government House, Natal, to a gentleman concerning his desire to secure local contracts for supplies and stating, in part, 'I went into [Percy] Girourad's figures after he left and found they were not altogether sound. I took the whole Natal military traffic, calculated what it would cost over the East London Johannesburg (centre of gravity) route and compared it with the Durban Johannesburg rates. With goods at 2s. per ton per mile the Natal bill is somewhat the smaller. Mr [David] Hunter has gone to Pretoria with an offer to make a fresh start on very liberal terms wh. I hope will be acceptable to the C-in-C. There is an excellent Imperial feeling here wh. I shall take advantage of', May 1901 and a T.L.S. thanking his correspondents for their Address and expressions of loyalty and referring to Umkomaas, commenting 'I trust that the Marine Residence of the Governor at Durban will be sufficiently pushed forward between this and next winter to allow me the opportunity of making it a pied a terre for visits to those parts of the Colony comprised in the north and south coasts and in Zululand. The ceremony in which I have been taking part will be a further step towards the advancement of that prosperity to which Umkomaas and neighbourhood aspire', July 1901), Matthew Nathan (1862-1939, British Lieutenant-Colonel and Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1907-09; A.L.S. to Frederick Moor, the last Prime Minister of Natal, stating, in part, 'I am facilitating the kind wishes of my European friends at the various towns of the Colony to say goodbye to me and as in this case the magistrate seems to think the natives would also desire to bid farewell. I do not want to say that they shall not do so. Yesterday at Eshowe the chiefs practically confined themselves when replying to my remarks to thanking for the appointments of Shepstone & Addison. I certainly agree with the Chiefs in thinking these appointments were good ones', November 1909), Paul Methuen (1845-1932, 3rd Baron Methuen, British Field Marshal, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Natal 1910; A.L.S. and two signed clipped pieces), Harry Escombe (1838-1899, South African Statesman, Prime Minister of Natal 1897; two A.Ls.S. to the gold mining pioneer J. R. Lys in Pretoria regarding some notes and drafts, and the rent for Munro's farms which are 'mortgaged to the bank up to the end of 1871' and remarking that it 'makes the amount of £6 a farm for 1871 the more incomprehensible - pray throw some light upon it', 1870-71, and a third A.L.S. to H. R. Collins in Durban regarding soundings in Durban Bay), Albert Henry Hime (1842-1919, British Lieutenant-Colonel, Prime Minister of Natal 1899-1903 during the Boer War; T.L.S. to H. C. Shepstone on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister's Office expressing on behalf of the Government 'its great obligation to you as member of the Committee appointed to consider and report upon applications for the War Medal from Civilian Government Employes (sic) in this Colony', 1902, and a brief A.Q.S. on the printed stationery of the Prime Minister's Office, 'Union is strength', accompanied by the original envelope, 1903), Melmoth Osborn (1833-1899, English Diplomat who joined the Natal civil service in 1854; L.S. concerning the public auction of Government lands, 1877), Henry Bale (1854-1910, South African Lawyer, Chief Justice of the Natal Supreme Court; A.L.S. to Mr. Gray, being a letter of condolence, April 1906), George Christopher Cato (1814-1893, English-born South African merchant, a Natal pioneer and the first Mayor of Durban, 1854; ink signature and inscription, to his son, on an 8vo flyleaf removed from a book, dated Natal, 1861, in his hand), and an unusual signed 11.5 x 8 photograph by eleven individuals, being the administrators and administrative secretaries of the provinces of South Africa at the time of the South African National Convention 1908-09 including John M. Hershensohnn (secretary to the Prime Minister of Natal), George T. Plowman (Administrator of Natal 1918-28), Ernest Kilpin (Chief Secretary to the South African National Convention) and Geysbert Reitz Hofmeyr (First Clerk of the House of Assembly 1910-20 and Administrator of South West Africa 1920-26) etc. Some faults (minor tears to edges, neat splits to folds etc) and age wear, G to about VG, 15

CARON GEORGE R.: (1919-1995) American Pilot, Tail Gunner of the Enola Gay during the historic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, 6th August 1945. Selection of Ds.S., George R Caron, each being signed cheques, Denver, Colorado, December 1982 - January 1983. All of the cheques are drawn on the Midland Federal Savings bank and all are entirely completed in Caron's hand, made payable to various companies etc., including Farmers Insurance Exchange, Fashion Bar, J. C. Penney, Energy Assistance Foundation etc., for sums between $5 and $300. All bear bank cancellations, only very slightly affecting a few letters at the beginning of each signature. VG, 15

[HITLER & THE OCCULT]: DARRE RICHARD WALTHER (1895-1953) German Reichsminister of Food & Agriculture 1933-42, the seventh most senior commander in the Schutzstaffel (SS). Printed Note signed, R Walther Darre, on one side of a correspondence card, Berlin, 1935, to [SS Oberfuhrer Weissthor], in German. The printed text reads, in full, 'I was delighted to receive your good wishes for the New Year. I thank you sincerely for them, and reciprocate them warmly. Heil Hitler!' Signed by Darre in black fountain pen ink at the foot in his capacity as Reichsbauernfuhrer. Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with a T.L.S., R Walther Darre, one page, 4to, Berlin, 16th July 1936, to [SS Oberfuhrer Weissthor] 'Lieber und sehr verehrter Herr Oberst!', in German. Darre writes, in part, 'I enclose several representations of the coat of arms (no longer present) and should be grateful if you would let me know which you like best of these drafts, or whether one could combine two of them'. With a portion of the upper left corner of the letter neatly cut away and with a neat split to one fold, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, but not the signature. Two letters with interesting association. G to VG, 2Karl Maria Wiligut (1866-1946) German Occultist who joined the Schutzstaffel (SS) under the pseudonym Karl Maria Weissthor in 1933.Weissthor was possibly the oddest member & most strange personality of Adolf Hitler's entourage, and was labelled 'Himmler's Rasputin'. The Austrian-born Occultist became a member of the SS after having been introduced to Heinrich Himmler and the two soon became firm friends. Weissthor claimed to be the last warlock or magician of an order dating back to the lost continent of Atlantis, and Himmler never tired of listening to Weissthor's stories of the hidden history of Atlantis as revealed in his visions. He was responsible for sending scores of Nazi agents around the world on a quest for magical artifacts and also designed the dreaded SS Totenkopf ring and hat badge, as well as the runic symbols used on black SS uniforms and flags.

EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A good official T.L.S., Edward R I, as King, one page, folio, n.p., 2nd April 1936, to [the leaders of the Non-Conformist Churches], on black bordered mourning stationery featuring the Royal coat of arms at the head. The King states, in full, 'It gives me much pleasure to receive this Address from my Non-Conformist subjects and to know of their sympathy with Queen Mary and myself, of their affection for King George and their appreciation of his character. I greatly value your expressions of loyalty to myself and can assure you that I shall ever prize those civil and religious liberties which are the heritage of my people and the basis of our freedom. I thank you for your recognition of my efforts to promote feelings of sympathy and understanding among all sections of my people. The Free Churches of this country have always helped to evoke that spirit of Christian Comradeship which seeks to relieve distress in our own land and to promote peace throughout the world, and I pray that the Blessing of God may rest on your labours'. With blank integral leaf. A letter of good content to the leaders of the Protestant non-Anglican churches. A couple of very small, minor spots of foxing, some light creasing and minor traces of former mounting to the verso of the integral leaf. About VG King George V had passed away on 20th January 1936.

ROSEBERY EARL OF: (1847-1929) British Prime Minister 1894-95. A.L.S., with his initial R, one page, n.p., 4th January 1891, to Dr. Champneys, on Rosebery's monogrammed black bordered mourning stationery. Rosebery announces 'You must have thought me dead or an absconded bankrupt', and continues to explain 'But the truth is that for some days I have been departed from my secretary and my chequebook: the two being practically identical'. VG Rosebery's correspondent may have been Francis Champneys (1848-1930) British Obstetrician who raised the status of midwives and supported the founding of the History of Medicine Society.

L.S., Wilhelm R, one page, 4to, Kiel ('on board the motor yacht Hohenzollern'), 25th June 1910, to Eduard Arnhold, Privy Councillor of Commerce, in German. The Emperor writes, in full, 'With great satisfaction I have learned that you have already generously donated the sum of 250,000 Marks to the independent research institutes whose foundation I intend to propose on the occasion of the centenary of the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. You have given me an extraordinary pleasure in doing so and have done a great service to the sciences in Germany. I gladly accept your kind donation as a shining testimony of your generosity, which I am well acquainted with and which is especially well-known to the arts. I would like to express my warmest thanks to you. I remain your well-disposed……' With blank integral leaf. Some light uniform age toning, VG
