SNOWD...., ..ABINET MAK...., APPRAISER, ...ORTH ALLERTON`, on ring turned legs, brass caps and castors, 28.75in (72.6cm) h, 34.5in (87.6cm) w, 22in (56cm) d. Robert Snowden, near the Church, Northallerton, Yorkshire, cabinet maker (1821-1840).

An interesting and historic WWII P.O.W. wartime log belonging to 2nd Lt John M Bridges U.S.A.F. Lt Bridges from Alabama was part of the crew of the B-17 bomber "Star Dust", which was shot down on May 10th 1944, two of the crew were killed. He was imprisoned at Stalag Luft III Sagan which is 100 miles southeast of Berlin. This camp was made famous with the escape attempts known as "The wooden horse" and "The great escape". This wartime log was published by the War Prisoners Aid of the YMCA. There are numerous watercolour and pencil sketches of camp life including the auditorium, guard tower, camp plan, compound at night and the memorial to the fifty captured P.O.W`s that were shot after the great escape. There is also an amusing cartoon of an escape tunneller emerging out of a toilet and asking his fellow prisoner to move to a separate toilet. Also in the journal are various Nazi newspaper cuttings, poetry, drawings of aircraft and women and several cellophane packets containing what looked to be tea and bread etc, also in this lot is a letter addressed to 1st Lieutenant Edmund R Hollister from his father who lived at 1312 North Tejon Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Lt Hollister was also a prisoner at Stalag Luft III, the letter mentions day to day items but also the death of President Theodore Roosevelt`s son in France (illustrated)
