TOLKIEN J. R. R.: (1892-1973) English Writer, author of the classic fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. T.L.S., J. R. R. Tolkien, one page, 4to, Headington, Oxford, 24th November 1967, to Miss. Karen C. Walker. Tolkien commences his letter by asking 'Am I right in thinking that your mother was Cecile Barbier?' and continues 'I have recently met her sister Marie (who married her cousin and remains Barbier), and one of her daughters'. The author further writes 'I remember your grandfather, Paul Barbier, very well. He was extremely kind to me as a very young man on my first university job. He was a great scholar and a great character, and I remember a good deal about him' and informs his correspondent 'I have been ill for some time and am now very heavily engaged with work of my own, and putting memories of this kind in order actually takes up a good deal of time, and I haven't any to spare at present' although concludes 'But I will jot down things that I remember from time to time and perhaps you would like to jog my memory early next year to see what I have got for you' . Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with a T.L.S. by Tolkien's assistant, Phyllis M. Jenkinson, with her initials ('P.M.J.'), on behalf of the writer, one page, 8vo, Headington, Oxford, 29th February 1968, also to Miss. Karen Walker. Tolkien writes, in part, 'I am afraid I haven't had any time to jot any memories of your grandfather down, as I have had a very disturbing and troubling time….I cannot see any relief from pressure for some time ahead and I am afraid it is no good my asking you to jog my memory again….but I will keep you in mind….in case I find some moment'. Accompanied by the original envelope. VG to about EX, 2 Paul Barbier (1873-1947) Professor of French at Leeds University 1903-38 who has been described as 'an exceptional scholar and inspiring teacher as well as an efficient adminstrator'. Barbier was a keen linguist and took a particular interest in words and names which led him to focus on lexicographical studies.

Vintage signed 8 x 6 photograph of Eisenhower standing in a three quarter length pose wearing ceremonial robes, with two other officials standing to either side, also wearing robes. Photograph by the Irish Times and bearing their blindstamp. Signed by Eisenhower in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the image, partially across a darker area. Accompanied by a T.L.S. by Colonel Ernest R. Lee, one page, 8vo, Headquarters, U.S. Forces, European Theater, Office of the Commanding General, 6th November 1945, to Paddy MacHugh in Belfast, stating that he is replying in the absence of Kay Summersby and enclosing the picture 'which General Eisenhower was pleased to autograph'. The manuscript document is a warrant issued to Spencer Compton, late Paymaster General of the Guards, Garrisons, and Land Forces and requests that deductions of twelve pence out of every twenty schillings and one day's pay out of the year from three regiments be applied for the use of the Royal Hospital. Countersigned at the foot by Robert Walpole (1676-1745) British Prime Minister 1721-42, George Dodington (1691-1762) English Politician, and William Yonge (1693-1755) British Politician. Partially laid down at the lower right edge and neatly trimmed to the left edge, slightly affecting the text but not the signature. The manuscript document is a warrant issued to Henry Fox, Paymaster General of the Guards, Garrisons, and Land Forces, for deducting the subsistence of two men per company from the Captains, in case they do not keep them complete according to the establishment. Countersigned at the foot by Henry Bilson-Legge (1708-1764) British Chancellor of the Exchequer 1754-55, 1756-57, 1757-61, Frederick North (1732-1792) British Prime Minister, 1770-82, and James Oswald (1715-1769) Scottish Politician. With a small torn portion to the lower left edge, affecting the text, but not the signature, a small tear to the central fold and dust staining. GHenry Fox (1705-1774) British Politician.

Countersigned at the foot by Robert Jenkinson (1770-1828) 2nd Earl of Liverpool, British Prime Minister 1812-27 and Home Secretary 1807-09. Vintage signed Christmas greetings card by both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth individually, the stiff cream 4to folding card featuring an image to the inside of a view of Windsor Castle taken from distance and with the trees of Windsor Great Park visible in the foreground. Signed ('George R') by the King and signed ('Elizabeth R') by the Queen, each with their names alone in bold blue fountain pen inks beneath a printed greeting. An unusual, large vintage signed 23 x 17½ photograph, the image depicting the Queen standing in a half-length pose, accompanied by various dignitaries and guests at the official launch of the British Oil Tanker S.S. British Admiral. Signed ('Elizabeth R') in fountain pen ink with her name alone to the lower photographer's mount, beneath a printed caption, S.S. “British Admiral” built by Vickers Ltd (Shipbuilding Group) Launched from Barrow Shipyard by H.M. The Queen 17th March 1965. The photograph has been professionally mounted at the centre of two further images of the S.S. British Admiral, the first depicting the ship as it was launched, and the second depicting the ship manoeuvring at sea, each image framed and glazed within a larger beech coloured wooden frame to form a triptych with an overall size of 74 x 19½. The signature is slightly faded although legible. With water staining to the lower border beneath one of the images, and with light age toning, otherwise G
KENNEDY JOHN F.: (1917-1963) American President 1961-63. Assassinated. T.L.S., John Kennedy, one page, 4to, n.p., 27th January 1953, to Anthony Galluccio ('Dear Tony'), on the printed stationery of the United States Senate, Committee on Labor and Public Welfare. Kennedy acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's recent letter regarding a communication relating to a Mr. DeSimone and an attached affidavit of support from Stephen Ferrante, and continues to explain 'I have immediately contacted the American Consul General at Rome, Italy, asking that he look into this matter with a view to giving it his favorable consideration', concluding by stating that as soon as he receives a report he will get in touch with Mr. DeSimone. Some extremely minor creasing and one small, light stain close to, but not affecting, the signature. Together with Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006) American President 1974-77. Ford was a member of the Warren Commission that investigated the assassination of John F. Kennedy. It was Ford's responsibility to prepare a biography of Lee Harvey Oswald. T.L.S., Gerald R. Ford, one page, 4to, Washington D.C., 14th September 1973, to Iain Garry, on the printed stationery of the Congress of the United States, Office of Minority Leader, House of Representatives. Ford acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter requesting a copy of Portrait of an Assassin, and continues to explain 'I am sorry I do not have any extra copies. In fact, the only copy I have is my own personal copy. Just recently I wrote to the publisher, Simon and Shuster, for additional copies and was told that copies are no longer available'. VG, 2

This dates from the short period Nov 1964 - Nov 1965 when the service did not run north of Baker St on Sundays, after that time it no longer ran to Chesham at all. A little damage from the runner at the r/h edge, otherwise in very good condition. [1]

John Ridgewell (1937-2004) ''Gasometer and Canal locks at Bingley, W. Yorks'' Signed, inscribed and dated 1977 on old label verso, oil on canvas, 64.5cm by 100cm Born in Essex in 1937, John Ridgewell studied at Colchester School of Art between 1954-8 where he was taught the skill of wood engraving by John O'Conner, who was related to the surrealist painter Paul Nash. In 1958 John entered the Royal College of Art aged just 21, he was a student at the same time as David Hockney and R B Kitaj. On graduation he accepted a position to teach at Scarborough School of Art from 1961-6, leaving to focus solely on painting. His artistic style was strongly influenced by the work of Georges Braque in 1956, who John admired throughout his life. John's distinctive artistic style developed during his time in Scarborough where he was inspired by the dramatic landscape around him. It was during his time in Yorkshire that John began to represent and interpret landscape in the surrealist style, which became characteristic of his work. Throughout his life he exhibited in mixed shows at the New Art Centre, Piccadilly Art Gallery and Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He has a loyal connection with the Austen Hayes Gallery, York. Austen Hayes believed in John's work and held a number of one man exhibitions in the gallery in the 1960's. He also exhibited at the Grape Lane Gallery and Minstral Galleries.
