Early D.S., George R, as King, at the head, one page (vellum), large oblong folio, Court at Saville House, 27th October 1760, in the first year of the King's reign. The partially printed document is a military commission appointing Basil Beridge to be a Captain in the 21st Regiment of Dragoons, or Royal Forresters, commanded by John Manners, Marquess of Granby. Countersigned at the foot by William Pitt (1708-1778) The Elder. British Statesman, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1756-57, 1757-61 and British Prime Minister 1766-68. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light dust staining and creasing to the corners and edges, only very slightly affecting the signatures, about VG King George III had acceded to the throne on 25th October 1760, just two days before signing the present document.

VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. D.S., Victoria R I, as Queen, at the head, eight pages, folio, Court at Saint James's, 3rd April 1862. The manuscript document, on black bordered mourning paper, is addressed to Councillor Edward George Fitzalan Howard, Deputy to the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal and Hereditary Marshal of England, and is a Licence for Allan Cowburn, Vicar of Tidenham in Gloucestershire to take the surnames of Smith and Masters and the Arms of Masters and Smith quarterly, and extensively detailing the events leading to Cowburn's petition for the same to the Queen, further instructing Howard that 'our Concession and Declaration be recorded in Our College of Arms to the end that Our Officers of Arms and all others upon occasion may take full notice and have knowledge thereof.' Countersigned at the conclusion by Sir George Grey (1799-1882) British Politician, Home Secretary 1846-52, 1855-58. With blind embossed paper seal affixed and tied to the left edge with the original black ribbon. Accompanied by the original envelope. Some light overall age wear and staining and some extensive, although neat, splits to the right edges of the folds to each page, only very slightly affecting the text, but not the signatures. G
GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. D.S., Appd. G. R. I., as King, at the head, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 11th June 1921, on the blind embossed stationery of the First Lord of the Treasury. The typed document is a dictated letter to the King from Austen Chamberlain at the request of the Prime Minister and recommends that a Knighthood be conferred upon George Branson on the occasion of his appointment to be a judge of the High Court of Justice. Signed by Austen Chamberlain at the foot. One file hole in the upper corner and very light, minor age wear. Together with Queen Mary(1867-1953) Queen Consort of the United Kingdom. Book signed and inscribed, a hardback edition of Great Flights by C. St. John Sprigg, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons Ltd., January 1936 (reprinted). A presentation copy inscribed in bold, dark fountain pen ink by Queen Mary to the front free endpaper, 'For Jamie Douglas from Mary R' and dated Christmas 1940 in her hand. Some light foxing and some slight damp staining to the head of a few pages and cloth boards. Lacking the dust jacket. Vintage signed 6.5 x 11 photograph, the image depicting the Queen, dressed all in white, standing at the foot of a staircase. Signed in pencil by the photographer to the lower photographer's mount and annotated by them 'Her Majesty the Queen on board H.M.Y. Victoria & Albert'. The typed document is addressed to Cosmo Gordon Lang, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, and is a mandate for the Consecration of the Reverend James Lawrence Cecil Horstead to be a Bishop, 'to the intent that he should exercise his functions in one of Our Possessions and also in one of Our Protectorates abroad'. With blind embossed paper seal affixed at the head along with the original black ribbon. A portion of the second page to the integral leaf has been neatly cut away, evidently for the removal of the countersignature. Some very minor, extremely light staining to the left edge, about VG William Cosmo Gordon Lang (1864-1945) Scottish Anglican Prelate who served as Archbishop of York (1908-28) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1928-42). The Most Rev. James Horstead (1898-1989) Anglican Bishop of Sierra Leone (1936-61) and Archbishop of West Africa (1955-61).

The typed document is addressed to the Lord Bishop of London and states that, following an Act passed in the seventh year of the reign of Queen Victoria entitled An Act to make better Provision for the Spiritual Care of populous Parishes, 'a Parish for Spiritual Purposes was constituted out of the Parish of Hanwell in the County of Middlesex…and is called the Parish of Saint Thomas, Hanwell', and further nominating Cecil Alfred Osborne to be Perpetual Curate of the Parish of Saint Thomas made vacant by the death of Herbert James Beck. Signed ('Elizabeth R') in dark fountain pen ink and dated 1956 in her hand to the clear border beneath the image. With a printed greeting opposite and a gold embossed crown to the front cover. Accompanied by the original Registered envelope post marked at Buckingham Palace, 14th December 1956. Some light overall foxing and staining, only very slightly affecting the image and signature. An Important Afghanistan Campaign and Indian Mutiny Archive From the Estate of Captain Herbert Calthorpe Gardner - 38th Bengal Native Infantry Died 28th June 1857. Born 30th August 1822. Served in Afghanistan 1842. Husband of Emma Prescott. Grave in Kasauli - "Sacred to the memory of Herbert Calthorpe Gardner Captn 38th L.I. 4th son of Genl the Honr W.H. Gardner R.A. who died at Kussoulie 28th June 1857 from the effects of service with the mutineers." Mentioned in the supplement to the London Gazette, February 10th 1858 An impressive collection of letters, dispatches, drawings and ephemera. Starting with letters from Captain Gardner to his father, the first letter 16th Sept 1840 from Spithead, detailing the ‘tremendous gale’ ready to set sale for Calcutta/India, Addressed to Major General The Hon. W H Gardner. Proceeding letters detailing the voyage with harpooning tortoises, ships crowded with people bound for Australia, catching albatross, the voyage coming to a conclusion in January 1841 Being ordered to Afghanistan April 28th 1841: April 30th, “I have just seen the death of Ensign Norton from drowning in the Ganges near Allahabad and a Lieut Tuglis who tried to save him was also drowned, the Ensign started with us at the same time from Calcutta, They have ordered two European regiments to China so that shows affairs are not yet settled in that quarter” November 19th 1841: “We have at last determined to go through the Bolan Pass to Candahar” March 2nd 1842: “We are looking out very anxiously for the next dispatch from Candahar” February 26th 1842: Writing about the march through the pass and the difficulties of the insurgents: “the last dispatch that came in mentioned that we expected a night attack but that our men were well on the lookout for them” “it certainly is a disgraceful business, but the leaders have paid dearly for it, I fear there are very few survivors” The reports to his father continue with his views on Candahar and the anxious wait, seeing Brigadier England leave, the attacks on the camps. 1843 Captain Gardner in India and based at Meerut: “which is one of the finest if not the finest stations in India” At the outbreak of the mutiny many letters and dispatches are received and sent: “I am happy to say that the 5th R I have been disarmed today so that matters are ?? regarding ?? two company’s” “In case of any disturbances please ?? to the ?? at the regiment, kill all mutineers or ?? I will give a reward of 50 for every man killed and 20 for every deserter “ Further letters, including a letter being sent from Captain Gardner detailing his estate and whom should receive money. A report about fleeing the mutineers. Communications with his wife who was also in India and fleeing from the mutineers: “My dearest wife, I am sadly disappointed at not having received any letter from you since yours of the 22nd may, and cannot help imaging all kinds of evils” After Captain Gardner’s death in 1857 his wife Emma begins writing home, including an ink drawing of her camel convoy escaping the mutineers. The lot also contains a CDV album with family pictures including Captain Gardner, two copies of the 1857 Friend of India newspaper, a bible carried by Emma, a book titles The Crisis in the Punjab, 1858, a mahogany cased pencil drawing showing Captain Gardner’s Grave, a photograph of the grave, shares, etc. The letters assisted Christopher Hibbert author of The Great Mutiny 1857, published 1978, Captain Gardner is mentioned in this book, two letters included from the author. With over 500 pieces. Provenance by family decent.
