A.L.S., Elizabeth R, three pages, 8vo, Clarence House, 24th February 1988, to [Michael] Denison, on her black monogrammed stationery. The Queen Mother states that it was a delight to have come to Shardeloes and that she greatly enjoyed the `splendid luncheon party`, continuing `It was so kind of you and your dear Dulcie [Gray] to ask me to such a lovely occasion, so many delightful fellow guests, and such a pleasure to be seated at lunch between Sir John [most likely Mills, or possibly Gielgud?] and yourself. It was all great fun, and the house has such a wonderful atmosphere of peace and beauty, that one felt at once, relaxed and happy.` In concluding the Queen Mother further remarks `The new Corgi is a great addition, what a glamourous fellow!`. Accompanied by the original registered envelope hand addressed by the Queen Mother and signed by her with her initials ER in the lower left corner. A letter of interesting association. They are accompanied by the young Prince Charles and Princess Anne, the infant Prince Andrew and some corgis. Signed by the Queen (`Elizabeth R`) and by Prince Philip (`Philip`) in dark fountain pen inks to the lower border beneath the image. Dated 1960 in the Queen`s hand. A printed greeting appears opposite the image. Professionally matted in black with a silver border and framed and glazed in a plain black framed to an overall size of 18 x 10.5. VG
BRITISH ROYALTY: A fine, rare vintage signed Imperial Cabinet photograph by Queen Victoria (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901, her son King Edward VII (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10, and her grandson King George V (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36 individually. The wonderful image, by W & D Downey of London, shows Queen Victoria seated in a full length pose holding her infant great grandson, the future King Edward VIII, in her lap. King Edward VII and King George V stand in full length poses either side of the Queen. Signed by Queen Victoria in black fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image, `Victoria R I & little Edward Albert`, also adding the date 16th July 1894 in her hand. Signed (`Albert Edward`) by King Edward VII and signed (`George`) by King George V, each in dark fountain pen ink with their names alone to clear areas of the image. Queen Victoria has experienced a little pen trouble, with a few letters a little light. Signed photographs depicting four generations of the British Royal family are rare and desirable. Some glue remnants to the borders of the photograph, evidently caused by previous framing. G. The photograph was captured at White Lodge, Richmond Park on the occasion of Prince Edward of York`s christening. In her journal for July 1894 Queen Victoria wrote `The dear fine baby wearing the Honiton lace robe…[made from her own wedding veil]…was brought in & handed to me-I then gave him to the Archbishop & recd. Him back….the child was v.good…..& afterwards we were photographed, I holding the baby in my lap, Bertie and Georgie standing behind me, thus making 4 generations.`

Churchill`) on a slightly irregularly clipped piece removed from the conclusion of a letter signed. Three lines of text to the verso refer to a rifle and a court case involving Sir James Stevenson. Together with a selection of irregularly clipped signed pieces by various British Politicians, many of them Cabinet Ministers, all removed from letters or documents, including Herbert Morrison, Robert Cecil, Philip Sassoon, Clement Davies, R. HAYES RUTHERFORD B.: (1822-1893) American President 1877-81. A good, large D.S., R. B. Hayes, as President, one page (vellum), large folio, Washington, 2nd July 1879. The attractive engraved partially printed document appoints Horatio G. Wright to be a Chief of Engineers with the rank of Brigadier General. Signed by Hayes at the foot and countersigned by George W. McCrary (1835-1890) American Congressman, United States Secretary of War 1877-79. With blind embossed blue paper seal affixed. One very small hole in the left margin, not affecting the text or signatures, otherwise VG
ENGLAND RICHARD: (1793-1883) British General, served in the Crimean War with distinction and was the last of the original general officers who had accompanied the army to the Crimea to leave it. England directed the attack on the Redan, 18th June 1855. A.L.S., R England, one page, 8vo, Camp, 8th April 1855, to `My dear General`. England states `I send you a plan of the Green Hill works…at which we furnish daily 900 men (Rank & file) besides occasional working parties.` In a postscript to the integral leaf, signed with his initials, England adds `Each officer in command of this Pool is required to have an exact copy of this sketch in his possession.` Together with England`s original plan, an attractively executed sketch of the Ground in advance of 1st Parallel, one page, folio, n.p. (Camp), n.d. (8th April 1855), depicting Green Hill and the surrounding area including the positions of a French Battery, old Russian rifle pits, an advanced trench etc. England has added the figures of the covering party in various places on the plan, both at day and night, and an explanatory note, `There are 3500 yards of French (alltogether) in these works`. The plan is signed twice by England, once with his initials. Some light overall dust statining and age wear to both the letter and plan, G, 2. . . . . England`s letter and plan were prepared on the day that the Allies resumed their bombardment of the Russian defences at the Siege of Sevastapol.
MACDONALD HECTOR: (1853-1903) British Major General, served in the Boer Wars. Known as Fighting Mac. Appointed Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in Ceylon, he committed suicide in 1903 following accusations of homosexual activity with local boys. A.L.S., H. R. MacDonald, two pages, 8vo, Pall Mall, London, 24th June n.y., to Duff, on the printed stationery of the Army & Navy Club. MacDonald thanks his correspondent for their note and advice, which he has acted upon in correspondence, commenting on the subsequently received reply `It is not very satisfactory and it looks as if the correspondence had been bottled by someone`. With blank integral leaf. Two extremely small pinholes to the upper edge, not affecting the text or signature. VG
EDWARD VII: (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10. A good D.S., Edward R, as King, at the head, three pages, folio, Court at Saint James`s, 11th October 1902. The manuscript document is addressed to Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal and Sir Frederick Darley and appoints them to be members of the South African War Commission of Inquiry alongside the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine and Viscount Esher, who had been previously appointed, `to inquire into the military preparations for the War in South Africa, and into the supply of men, ammunition, equipment and transport by sea and land in connection with the campaign, and into the military operations up to the occupation of Pretoria.` Countersigned at the conclusion by Aretas Akers-Douglas (1851-1926) 1st Viscount Chilston. British Statesman, Home Secretary 1902-05. With two blind embossed seals. VG.
KITCHENER EARL: (1850-1916) British Field Marshal. A.L.S., H H Kitchener, Lieut R E, one page, folio, Kensington Museum, 11th December 1878, to Corporal Brophy. Kitchener informs his correspondent that at a meeting of the Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund it was decided that Brophy should receive `a special present of any instrument you may choose to the value of £10.10 or the money to spend as you like if you prefer it in recognition of your valuable service…during the period of 5 ½ years that you have been employed on the Survey of Palestine`. With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG. . . . In 1874 Kitchener was assigned by the Palestine Exploration Fund to a mapping survey of the Holy Land and over the next three years he surveyed what is today Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Kitchener`s survey had a lasting effect on the Middle East and the ordnance survey serves as the basis for the grid system used in modern maps of Israel and Palestine.
PATTON GEORGE S.: (1885-1945) American General of World War II. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, an engaging image of Old Blood and Guts in a head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform. Signed in dark fountain pen ink at the base of the image, `To R. Bruce Love from G S Patton Jr.` Rare. Some light surface creasing and a few heavier corner creases, about G. . . Accompanied by a copy of a typed statement by Bruce Love explaining how his sister, Dorothy Love, served with the Red Cross in England setting up Clubmobiles to service American soldiers and airmen. He explains that, in preparation for the invasion of Normandy in June 1944, a hundred club mobiles were made ready and sent to France following the invasion. Love`s sister was assigned to Patton`s Third Army and followed them through France and into Germany, creating many opportunities for her to meet and talk with the General. Love concludes his statement, `I wrote to my sister that [Patton] might be more politely referred to as "Old Plasma and Intestines". My sister told this to the General to his amusement. He then gave my sister an autographed photograph for me that I have kept for over 60 years`.
