A Victorian Royal Naval officer’s special pattern presentation sword, blade 79.5cms etched PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN R. CARTER, AS A TOKEN OF RESPECT FROM THE SEAMEN OF H.M.S. EMERALD. 1863, together with crowned Royal Arms and fouled anchor, recipient’s crest a stag’s head upon tawse all amidst flowering foliage, gilt brass hilt, the guard ribs each chiselled with fruiting oak in high relief and with crowned fouled anchor, lion’s head pommel, wire bound fish skin covered grip, bullion dress knot (incomplete), in its leather scabbard with brass mounts, locket mouth chiselled with acanthus foliage in relief. Gilding worn, scabbard creased and some leather consolidated.The sword of Rear Admiral Richard Carter, RN, mate 1850, Lieut. 1853, Comdr. 1862, Capt. 1869, Rear-Adml. 1886.
