A street is not a street without people, it is as dead as mutton. It had to be a combination of the two – the mills and the people'. (L.S. Lowry) It is for his paintings of people and the industrialised north that Lowry is best known, and it is easy to see through paintings such as Street Scene how the artist gained a unique place in the conscience of British collectors. Having been born in Manchester, a focal point of industrial Britain, Lowry's exposure to a deeply urban landscape was guaranteed. A career as a rent-collector ensured that he would regularly wander the streets surrounded by the mills and factories of the great metropolis and the life brimming within it. His genius was the ability to create his own unique artistic vision from the environment that engulfed him and had become imbued in his mind and sub-conscious. According to Lowry, the preoccupation with his surroundings began when he missed a train from Pendlebury, the suburb his family had moved to in 1909. Lowry was to recollect '...as I got to the top of the station steps I saw the Acme Spinning Company's mill, the huge black framework of rows of yellow-lit windows stood up against the sad, damp-charged afternoon sky...I watched this scene – which I'd looked at many times without seeing – with rapture' (Judith Sandling and Mike Leber, Lowry's City, A Painter and His Locale, Lowry Press, Salford, 2000, p.17). At this moment, an already apparent obsession with art became more focused and the foundations were laid for the prolific body of work that have endeared Lowry to the nation's hearts ever since.Dating from 1941, the present work hails from what is traditionally considered Lowry's finest period and bears all the qualities of his most desirable work. The street runs through the centre of the busy composition giving a strong sense of perspective, order and space. The terraced housing, shops and movement of the people in the foreground creates an almost tranquil atmosphere as the street winds down towards the central gates, symbolic of the industry and work that lies beyond to support this community. Factory chimneys, a church spire and mill are all present and complete a series of rich iconography.By cutting off the buildings at the canvas edges, Lowry reinforces a sense of space and continuity, as well as placing himself and us the viewer as close as possible to the street. This is purely for visual impact as Lowry, an intensely private man and quiet observer, was not inclined to mingle with the crowd or participate in the daily routine. The artist conveys so much with so little. Using just five colours – flake white, vermilion, Prussian blue, black and yellow ochre, he memorably evokes the bustling atmosphere of a street and its surroundings. The setting for Street Scene is, typically, unidentifiable. It has been well documented how Lowry's paintings were often fantastical constructions, taking various elements such as factories, streets, bridges, chimneys from different places (including, sometimes, his imagination) and bringing them together on canvas to produce a purely fictional and idealised view of a town or city. As in the case of Street Scene, this gave Lowry the freedom to manipulate a composition to his liking for added visual impact. Whilst indisputably a Manchester man, Lowry found time to travel to smaller towns around the country such as Berwick. The seemingly calm and arguably provincial nature of the street in this picture may well relate to his experience of such locations. The present work showcases Lowry's artistic range and is an exceptional portrayal of his most beloved subject. Street Scene embodies Sir Herbert Read's singular statement that 'Lowry is original, and even revolutionary in his vision. No one else to my knowledge has been so sensitively aware of the poetry of the English industrial landscape'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson A.R.A. (British, 1889-1946)A Canadian Dawn signed 'C.R.W. NEVINSON' (lower right)oil on canvas61.2 x 45.8 cm. (24 1/8 x 18 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceElizabeth Russell Workman, thence by descent to the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.ExhibitedLondon, Leicester Galleries, An Exhibition of New Works by C.R.W. Nevinson, October-November 1919, cat.no.2Manchester, City Art Gallery, C. R. W. Nevinson Exhibition, July-August 1920, cat.no.22Elizabeth Russell Workman (1874-1962) and husband Robert Alfred Workman (1872-1948) were collectors of Post-Impressionist and Scottish art (including work of the Scottish Colourists), and supporters of the avant-garde. Elizabeth appears to have been the more discerning and adventurous collector. As Wyndham Lewis recalled in his autobiography Blasting and Bombardiering: 'Mrs. Workman (of whom I did an excellent portrait) was one of the only people in England to understand French painting, of which she had some remarkably fine specimens'. No less than three Nevinson paintings were acquired by members of the Workman family from the war artist's solo Peace exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in 1919. A Canadian Dawn was Elizabeth's choice, and of the three pictures the one that stayed in the family the longest. All three pictures, that is Elizabeth's, husband Robert's and brother-in-law William's, were borrowed by Manchester City Art Gallery for their Nevinson Exhibition of 1920.Nevinson's stock as a painter, in those post-First World War days, was still high, and he still had the aura of a 'rebel', reminding us that Nevinson had been vitally involved, in pre-war days, in that product of the British avant-garde's prime mover Wyndham Lewis, the Rebel Art Centre in Great Ormond Street. We are grateful to Christopher Martin for his assistance in compiling this catalogue entry. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Zubeida Agha (Pakistani, 1922-1997)Untitled (Flowers in a Vase) signed and dated Zubeida '71 lower rightoil on canvas, framed90.1 x 43.8cm (35 1/2 x 17 1/4in).Footnotes:CELEBRATING ZUBEIDA AGHA'S BIRTH CENTENARYProvenanceThe Collection of Imran R. Sheikh; family of the artist.ExhibitedLondon, Bonhams, Zubeida Agha, 2022, No. 8 PublishedSalima Hashmi for Bonhams, Zubeida Agha: Celebrating an Extraordinary Career, 2022, p.8, No.8Zubeida Agha was a socially and politically aware individual, attuned to what was happening around her, which becomes critical to the viewing of this work. The year it was painted was marked by the civil war in Pakistan, where half the country broke away and Bangladesh came into being. Agha was close to many people 'on the other side', the most eminent among them being the celebrated artist Zainul Abedin, a dear friend. Her anguish at the time was shared by many among the art community. The painting belies all these circumstances and seems instead to be celebrating a moment of optimism and vigour. This was not unusual for the artist. She was known for keeping her emotions under wraps and her stoicism intact under extreme circumstances. The vase is placed in isolation against the light, a burst of colour emanating from its form. Agha often painted single bottles and vases which took her fancy. A particular favourite was a bottle of Chianti which made a regular appearance. A vase of Murano glass was another, strategically placed under a painting in which it appeared. These were considered decisions and no accident. The symbolic use of colour and form was intrinsic to her process. In this example, the two flowers stand defiant, rising from the austere form below; the narrative in the painting is deliberate and intentional. - Salima HashmiThis lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Ghulam Rasool Santosh (Indian, 1929-1997)Untitled (Enlightenment) signed lower upper left and signed, dated and with size, G R Santosh/34 x 41'/9/2/62 verso oil and wax on canvas, framed86.6 x 104.5cm (34 1/8 x 41 1/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired by the vendor's cousin, William Begley, in Kashmir from the artist between 1963-1965;Gifted to the vendor's family in 1969.Born Ghulam Rasool Dar in Chinkral Mohalla, Habba Kadal in Srinagar, Kashmir, Rasool came to be known as Ghulam Rasool Santosh, after he assumed his wife's name, Santosh, at the beginning of their marriage. In 1954 he enrolled at the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda and studied fine arts under N.S Bendre, where he produced a large body of figurative and landscape work in the cubist style. Kashmir was the subject of his landscapes, and his style remain unchanged until 1959, after which his works evolved and figuration gave way to abstraction. The period between 1959-1964, was a precursor to his neo-tantric style, for which he is most well known, and when the present lot was painted. The early sixties were politically, socially and art historically important for India. In 1959, New Delhi witnessed an influx of Tibetan exiles, including the Dalai Lama, who were driven out of Tibet by the Chinese government. This was coupled with the end of the Nehruvian era and the questions that were raised about the success of his industrialisation programmes and presidency. Artistic groups such as Group 1890 were also emerging that challenged and sought a new outlook on Indian Art. Inspired by these changes, Santosh wanted to move away from a derivative European style, and wanted to create an idiom that embraced his Kashmiri heritage within the broader Indian context. (Rebecca M. Brown, Awakening: A Retrospective of G.R. Santosh, Delhi Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2011, pp 29)Still captivated by Kashmir, he derived his inspiration for the body of work created during this period, including the present lot, from his native Kashmiri hills. Although elements of Cubism are apparent in this work, we can also see the beginnings of spirituality and mystery, that would flourish in his works after 1964, which is when his trip to the Amarnath cave resulted in a mystical experience, that transformed his works. This work is therefore important for it bridges his two crucial periods and fuses elements from both, something that would not be seen in his works again. George Keyt (Sri Lankan, 1901-1993)Untitled (Woman with a Vase) signed 'G Keyt' 71 upper leftoil on canvas, framed98 x 60.3cm (38 9/16 x 23 3/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired from Plate Loft Gallery, Sri Lanka in 2005.'The lyric painting of George Keyt is sensuous Indian poetry brought to canvas. Like earlier Indian painters of Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills, and M. F. Husain after him, Keyt takes as his primary theme woman as the focus of man's concern. He paints her in flat planes, with bounding lines and rich warmth of colour. His idiom occasionally carries in it a hint of Picasso but is, once again, in direct line with the traditional styles of Central India, Mewar, and Basohli. But the originality of Keyt's inspiration is undoubted, and his work remains uniquely his own.' (R. Bartholomew and S. S. Zubeida Agha (Pakistani, 1922-1997)Untitled (Cityscape) signed 'Zubeida Agha 46' lower leftoil on canvas, framed32 x 55.1cm (12 5/8 x 21 11/16in).Footnotes:CELEBRATING ZUBEIDA AGHA'S BIRTH CENTENARYProvenanceThe Collection of Imran R. Sheikh; family of the artist.ExhibitedLondon, Bonhams, Zubeida Agha, 2022, No. 1 PublishedSalima Hashmi for Bonhams, Zubeida Agha: Celebrating an Extraordinary Career, 2022, p.1, No.1A very rare early work by Zubeida Agha, it establishes her ability to respect and enhance the two-dimensionality of the canvas. Part of the Agha family collection, it hints at the vision that will eventually define Zubeida Agha's body of work. In the late 1940s, during the tumult of Partition, many homes were looted in the riots and artworks destroyed. This work, possibly because of its location, survived unscathed. Informally titled Cityscape, the simplified architectural forms suggest the mohalla, a neighbourhood familiar to the artist. There is no attempt to imply deep space, the buildings are defined in flattened, spatial relationships, woven into a composite whole and unfolded across the canvas. The modulated tonal variations and colours suggest a continuity to the city, beyond the limits of the given space. As a young painter, Agha was carefully assembling the forms and assigning them roles as clusters in the city neighbourhood.Art historian Iftikhar Dadi viewed Zubeida Agha as 'an independent painter who stubbornly charted her own trajectory without much influence from other artists or artistic trends.' (Iftikhar Dadi, Modernism and the Art of Muslim South Asia, 2010, p.113) She must have been mindful of the audiences of her time and the preference for more recognisable 'pictures' and the picturesque. She chooses instead to design the image in terms of a flowing line which orchestrates a security of purpose, a mature work for a young painter. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Purchased from the above sale.Having defeated the river god Achelous in a wrestling contest for her hand in marriage, Greek mythology records that Heracles took the Calydonian princess, Dejanira, to be his wife. The present work shows the centaur Nessus having kidnapped Dejanira. Whilst taking her across the river Euenos, Heracles was able to strike Nessus with a poisoned arrow - the hero can be seen kneeling and preparing his bow on the riverbank. Before dying, Nessus persuaded Dejanira to take some of his blood as he promised that, if mixed with oil, it could be used as a potion to stop Heracles's infidelity. The blood would poison Heracles, ultimately bringing about his death and the suicide of Dejanira. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
