BISCUIT DE SEVRES REPRESENTANT L'AMIRAL ABRAHAM DUQUESNE, DEUXIEME MOITIE DU XIXe SIECLED'après le modèle de 1785 de Martin Claude Monnot figurant Duquesne en uniforme tenant son épée, debout sur un piédestal inscrit 'Duquesne'.H: 51 cmA Sèvres biscuit figure of admiral Abraham Duquesne, second half of 19th centuryAfter the model of 1785 by Martin Claude Monnot, depicting Duquesne in uniform, holding on to the end of his sword, standing in front of a pedestal, on a flat square base inscribed 'DUQUESNE', 51.5cm high, impressed SEVRES and incised R 929 ZV to reverse of base, (tip of sword hilt broken off)Footnotes:An example from 1817 is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (accession no. C.45-1942).The model by Monnot was originally supplied to the manufactory in 1785 and was part of a series of 'Grands Hommes de la France' [Great Men of France] which was ordered by the comte d'Angiviller, first in marble and then in Sèvres biscuit porcelain. Another model from the series is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, see accession no. 05.11 for further details on the commission. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.comThe sword hilt is restored with the replaced tip section restuck and some small spots of associated overpaint around the area of the repair on the hand. There are also traces of overpaint along the top of his left wrist and underneath the wrist, above the sword, but it is not possible to determine if this is covering a repair and if the hand and wrist section might be restuck. There are some typical scratches and areas of dirt scattered to the figure. There is a tiny spot of restoration to the tip of his right index finger and some overpaint to the other fingers. However again it is not possible to determine if this is just related or hiding some restoration (the fingers are not replaced).Otherwise generally in good condition.
