A cased display of Life Guards items comprising Vic officer’s HP (enamel restored), post 1902 OR’s HP, ERII OR’s HP (top right corner of crown missing), the regimental devices from officers and OR’s WBPs, acorn wreath horse head strap (centre device from one badge missing), plated bit with brass ERII badges, a small pouch with WM R Crest flap badge, a pair of stirrup straps with WM buckles, in a red velvet lined darkwood, wall mounting display cabinet, 37” x 24” x 7”. A post 1902 RN officer’s sword, straight, slender fullered blade 31”, etched with R Arms, and crowned fouled anchor within rope bordered oak wreath panels, regulation gilt half basket hilt incorporating crowned fouled anchor, and with turn down side guard which locks to scabbard, lion’s head pommel, wirebound sharkskin grip, with blue and gilt dress knot, in its brass mounted leather scabbard and oilskin cover; together with black leather sword belt and slings, gilt WBC. Near VGC, the blade retaining virtually all original polish. Plate 10

A WWI Highland officer’s service broadsword, blade 33” with Royal Arms and maker’s escutcheon at forte of Buckmaster, 3 New Burlington St, London, regulation basket hilt the panels pierced with heart motifs, red white and blue liner (worn), domed pommel, wirebound fishskin grip, in its leather FS scabbard and frog, with long steel chape and ball stud, silver plate at top engraved “Lieut T West R Highlanders 42R (unclear) Died France 29-9-1918. Interned (sic) in the Ontario Cemetery. Aged 30 years” and HM Chester 1920. GC with a good dark patina to hilt. Plate 10
Scotland: James VI (1567-1625, crowned James I of England in 1603), first coinage AR Ryal or “Sword Dollar”, 1569. Obverse crowned Scottish shield dividing crowned “I” and crowned “R”, with legend. Reverse crowned sword, hand on left pointing to denomination “XXX” on right, with date split below “15” and “69”. To the left, below the date, the countermark of a crowned thistle. Fine (very minor edge loss) Plate 1 Note: When originally issued this Ryal had a value of 30 shillings. Following the rising price of silver the intrinsic value outstripped the face value and, in 1578, the coins were recalled, countermarked with the thistle and revalued/reissued at 36 shillings and 9pence. This particular piece was purchased through our rooms in February 1971.
