The plinth of one vase with insignificant scratch on one side, the tapered edge of one cover with flat chip, the chamfered lip of one cover with pinhead sized nick, neither of which are noticeable when the cover is in position, both covers original to their vase and not married, both of the superb quality associated with Turner

A CHINESE SILVER REPOUSSÉ CUP the bowl reserved with two shields and decorated with birds and bamboo on three naturalistic bamboo shoots and domed foot, detachable liner, 18cm h, maker SS, a pellet between and marked Hui, c1873, 10ozs 10dwts According to the inscriptions, the present cup was won as a prize in Hong Kong on December 25 1873. Forbes (H A Crosby), J D Kernan and R S Wilkins propose that the unknown maker may be Sunshing, active at Hong Kong in the third quarter of the 19th c and at Canton from c1820 (Chinese Export Silver 1785-1885, Milton 1975, Catalogue No 212). Slightly bent out of true and with a minor dent on the bowl but not otherwise damaged, old polish residue, well made and in good overall condition

JOHN JAMES STORY (1827-1900) A SHIPWRECK signed and dated 1892, 93 x 132cm The son of a Nottingham cordwainer, Story was baptised at St Mary`s Church in December 1827. Describing his profession as "Artist" or "Photographic Artist" in the Census of 1860, he painted in whole, or in part, "The Heroic Life and Career of Garibaldi", now in the collection of Brown University Library (Providence, R I). This Moving Panorama of 42 scenes from the life of the great Italian patriot is 4.5ft high and 140 feet long and is painted recto and verso in gouache. Story lived in Burton Street, Nottingham later moving to St Ann`s Well Road and Moffatt Street. His work was shown at the Annual Exhibition at Nottingham Castle from 1881 to 1900. Torn lower right extremely dirt from attic storage for many decades, unlined in the original gilt slip
