The MM appeared in the London Gazette 28th June 1945 and the recommendation is as follows, “Between 19 April 1944 and 20 June 1944, this N.C.O. showed consistent devotion to duty and disregard of danger in his eagerness to establish line communications in the Kohima area. His cheerful bearing during long periods of very hard work was a constant inspiration to his detachment and he never allowed enemy action to interfere with the job in hand. In particular on 9 May 1944, he laid a line to the 4 Inf. Bde. up a mule track on which he well knew Jap. patrols were active. The line was cut by the enemy and he had to be restrained by an officer from going out alone to attempt repair. Again on 26, 27 and 28 May 1944 whilst attached to 6 Inf. Bde. for the ascent and attack on Aradura Spur he exceeded his orders and laid beyond Bde. H.Q., through the leading battalion and to the 143 S.S. Coy. who were the leading troops. He was specially recommended for his work on this occasion to me by C.O., 1 R.Berks. who was shortly afterwards evacuated wounded. Generally a great deal of his work was done under fire and he constantly laid lines through territory in which it was known enemy parties were operating.”

R Sainsbury see letters to and from AJB Kiddell 24/1 and 28/1/55 In the 17th century, the Weald area of Kent, centred on the village of Wrotham, gave rise to a simple form of pottery using the local red clay. The vessels were decorated with watered-down clays (slip) which were applied to the surface before the pot was fired, and this was known as slip-ware. The potters of Wrotham are regarded as having created some of the most technically challenging and well drawn and designed slipware of its age. The communal drinking vessel, or tyg, derived its name from the Saxon, Tiegel, and was used on festive occasions to brew and serve posset (hot milk curdled with ale or wine and spices). The numerous handles meant it could be grasped from the centre of the table by any of the guests.
A Wrotham dark treacle glazed two handled posset pot, dated 1676, the barrel shape initialled EW and I.I, for the potter John Ifield, between the double loop handles, below a rosette or strawberry print band on the rim, 14cm (5.5 in) diameter, together with a copy of A J B Kiddell's 1954 ECC article (2) Literature: For an illustration of this piece when in the collection of R Sainsbury, see AJB Kiddell, ECC vol 3 part 2 1954 on Wrotham wares, plate 50b. Other Notes: A J B Kiddell of Sotheby's wrote to R Sainsbury "The globular tyg or posset pot is very interesting as it is by John Ifield, whom we know to have been a potter at Wrotham and is therefore documented. It has only one other companion and that is the jug in the Victoria and Albert, obviously by the same hand and dated 1674"
A Wrotham tyg dated 1696, the brown tapering sides with sprigs in yellow of I.E for the potter John Eaglestone, the initials W E M, the arms of Amsterdam and the lion and unicorn crowned, 17cm (6.75 in) high (D) Literature: See AJB Kiddell ECC Vol 3 Part II, 1954 also Kiddell's letter to Sainsbury 6/3/50. This tyg was in the 1954 ECC paper amongst Kiddell's listing of known dated pieces as being in the collection of R Sainsbury. Within the paper is a discussion as to who is the potter with the initials IE and to the use of the Amsterdam arms One handle is missing, the cone top off another handle is off but present and the piece has been broken and restored
