A cast copper-alloy 'vessica' type personal seal matrix dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1300. The matrix takes the form of a pointed oval in plan view, with a rounded suspension lug at one end adjacent to a worn midrib that originally extended down the entire length of the piece. The underside of the seal is engraved with the central design of a bird walking right within an internal solid border, surrounded by an inscription. This is well corroded and difficult to read, but a small amount can be transcribed: S'STEPhI[...]R[..]D[...]T (Seal of Stephen...). Condition: fair, coarse patina and heavily corroded in places. Length: 32mm. Discussion: personal seal matrices were mostly produced in the 13th century, being superceded in the early decades of the 14th century by pedestal type pieces with religious and secular mottoes.
