Personal photograph album, c. 1895-6, 199 albumen prints mounted rectos and versos to stiff card leaves, generally measuring approx. 8 x 10 cm (occasionally cut and mounted into patterns), slightly later pencilled captions, school prize inscription to front free endpaper ('To ?Cellie Van de Velde, for General Proficiencey, S. H. Nicholls, Pract. School, Hurlstone, Xmas 1895'), a further 17 photographs loosely inserted, together with an autograph letter in French from Louis-Elis‚ Fatiguet of the Vicariate Apostolic of Northern Kiangsi to an unnamed recipient, dated 1 February 1896 and thanking him/her for sending a collection of 'photographies ... trŠs bien r‚ussies', contemporary black skiver album, spine perished, the leaves remaining wire-stitched in linen-hinged bifolia, folio Contains images of Hong Kong, Canton, Nanking, Tientsin, Peking, Chekiang, Macao, and junks on the Peiho River; there are also photographs of Nikko, Yumoto, Tokyo, Kobe, Nagasaki, and Yokohama. The compiler appears to have had access to French diplomatic circles as there are photographs of Jules Harmand, French ambassador to Japan (1894-1905), and of the embassy grounds. (1)
*56th (West Essex) Regiment of Foot. A group of 13 photographic portraits of British officers, mid 1850s, mostly serving with the West Essex Regiment, including nine salt prints of Lieutenant Colonel [George Vaughan] Maxwell (88th Foot), Lieutenant Colonel Herbert (late 21st Fusiliers), Major [Louis John Armedie] Armit (Royal Engineers), Major [E.] Jodrell, Captain Bulwer, Captain Russell, Captain Trevers, Lieutenant Lemon and Dr Bird, plus albumen prints of Lieutenant Colonel S[amuel] R[uggles-]Brise, Captain Boggis, Lieutenant Lemon and Lieutenant Bird, 12.5 x 10.5cm and similar sizes, a little corner creasing and nicks to edges, contemporary pencil identifications to versos, together with two further related salt prints, one a group photograph of West Essex officers, identified to verso as Lieutenant McKinna, Ensign Z.D. Wilson, Captain Leyton, Lieutenant Clifford, Captain Raynes, Major Jodrell and Lieutenant Wilson, 11.5 x 16.5cm, plus an unidentified salt print, possibly of West Essex barracks, 11.5 x 21cm The 56th Foot left the Crimea on 12 July 1856 being part of the final rear guard to depart. On the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny, the Regiment was stationed in Ireland, sailing for India in late August 1857. It remained in Bombay through the Mutiny and did not see active service there. These photographs would appear to have been taken during this period. (15)

British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13, a group of five gelatin silver print photographs, printed later by Paul Popper Ltd., images of The five men at the Pole, Lieutenant Henry R. Bowers, Ponting with penguins at Cape Royds, Chris (sled dog) and the gramophone, and A Weddell seal at West Beach, Cape Evans, the first three with Paul Popper stamps, labels and captions to versos, the fourth photograph uncredited and uncaptioned, the fifth photograph mounted on paper with typed caption to lower margin and an agency stamp to verso, first and third photographs with slight corner creasing and each with a small split at upper margin, 19 x 24.5cm and very similar (5)
