In May 1920 he was all set to manage Gillingham in their first season of League football but resigned to return to Sheffield Wednesday. Having gained the Yorkshire club promotion in 1925-26 he was at the helm for the club's back-to-back League Division One Championship titles in 1928-29 and 1929-30.

Derbyshire Football Association Senior Challenge Cup winner's medal awarded to Bobby Barclay of Derby County F.C. in season 1928-29,9ct. gold, inscribed DERBYSHIRE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP, WINNERS, 1928-29, R, BARCLAY, DERBY COUNTY F.C., in original fitted case, the lid stamped gilt DERBYSHIRE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATIONBobby Barclay (1906-1969) was born in Scotswood, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and was signed out of local amateur football by Derby County in 1928 by manager and former Newcastle United player George Jobey. The inside forward scored 23 goals in 61 League appearances before joining Sheffield United in 1931 and where he would win a F.A. Cup winner's medal in 1936. He later won a runners-up medal with Huddersfield Town in 1938, and also won three England caps.Lot 790 in this auction is an unnamed F.A. Cup runners-up medal for Huddersfield Town in 1938 that has been consigned from the estate of the same deceased collector. However, the family and the auctioneer cannot confirm it there is a player connection between the medals being offered as lots 754 and 790, but Bobby Barclay did play for Huddersfield in the 1938 F.A. Cup Final.
