Both volumes are inscribed in ink `Joanna D Harper November 1913 from Mrs E A Wilson of Westal Cheltenham`, Mrs Wilson was wife of Dr E A Wilson who was Captain Scott`s second in command, and one of five men who did not return from the South Pole.

Almanac Rider’s British Merlin for the year of our Lord 1758...R Nutt for the Company of Stationers 1758. 16mo^ red morocco binding with tooled gilt embellishments a little rubbed. Interior contents appear good throughout and complete. A fine mid-18th c almanac containing a wealth of information on the state of the world and of the nation at the time. Apart from the usual calendar with observations on such things as eclipses as well as historical information^ there is information on all the fairs throughout the country^ information on the Government with lists of all sitting Peers and MPs. There is also a comprehensive list of all the court civil servants including such people as the members of the King’s Band (with Boyce as the Director). This list also includes some salaries for the leading people. There is also comprehensive lists of the various workmen involved in the Court and Government^ such as the bucket maker^ the water engine keeper at Windsor and the glazier at St James’s. There is also a comprehensive list of all officers in the Army and Navy – in the Army list is mentioned James Woolf – with his name neatly deleted in pencil following his death at Quebec. Also included are lists of principal people in all sorts of activities including the British Museum^ the physicians^ the major staff in all the insurance companies^ the Mint and a large number of other organisations. In other words^ if you wish to know who was who in mid-18th c Britain^ this book will doubtless tell you.
