A South Indian Pata, And An Indian Circular DhalThe First 17th Century, The Second Late 19th CenturyThe first with European broad tapering double-edged blade with shallow fuller over each side of the forte, characteristic iron hilt shaped over the hand and fore-arm, extending as two plates riveted over the forte and each with shaped terminal, the hand (old holes) with medial ridge and borders chased with running flower-heads, the fore-arm cut with slender vertical flutes, shaped applied border mounts around the hand and upper fore-arm secured by rivets and chiselled in low relief with arabesques, and with numerous cross-shaped piercings along each side, iron wrist-mount, and tubular grip (some wear and rust patination); the second of convex polished brass with four line engraved brass bosses against a ground profusely chased with foliage, the centre with a roundel pierced and chased with foliage centred on a flower-head, the outer border with running foliage en suite, the interior retaining its velvet-covered pad and bracers (2)95.5 cm. blade and 37 cm. diam. Welford Of London, Circa 1720-30With two-stage barrel, plain tang, signed border engraved rounded lock, figured moulded full stock (chipped beneath the tail of the lock, butt with minor repair on one side at the pommel) with apron around the tang, mounts comprising engraved foliate side-plate, border engraved spurred pommel decorated with foliage, plain trigger-guard with early form of acorn finial, turned baluster ramrod-pipe, and brass-capped wooden ramrod (steel parts with some light surface rust), London proof marks and barrelsmith's mark, probably of Joseph Clarkson 24.2 cm. barrel Footnotes:Richard 1 Welford was free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1712. Three Ottoman Or Balkan Ramrods (Suma)Late 18th/Early 19th CenturyThe first with tubular steel rod incised with triple lines crossing over each other between bands of chequering above and below, the latter above a faceted swelling tip, tapering silver grip cast and chased with spiral bands of foliage between fluting, spherical pommel en suite carrying an arched suspension loop cast with foliage on both sides centred on a nielloed star, threaded at the base and opening to reveal a pair of tweezers (one pincer missing); the second with tubular steel rod and brass tip with turned line decoration, the grip of circular section formed from shims of brass, green-stained bone and dark horn, and spherical pommel en suite carrying an arched pierced suspension loop, threaded at the base and opening to reveal a pair of tweezers; the last of similar form (grip with minor losses, some pitting), the tip threaded and opening to reveal a worm (3)39.5 cm. to 43.2 cm. A Fine German Breast-PlateCirca 1550, Probably Augsburg And Almost Certainly Etched By Ulrich HolzmannOf bellied form, with low medial ridge etched with a tapering band of symmetrical foliate scrollwork, upper edge prominently turned and roped above a broad band of etched symmetrical foliate scrollwork en suite and a slender curved flute, the latter and the armholes bordered by lightly etched scrollwork, the lower edges bordered by etched ropework, flanged lower-plate secured by leathers on dome-headed rivets and carrying a skirt of two articulated lames and all etched en suite, the lower lame with turned and roped arch over the crotch, and dome-headed rivets throughout 54 cm. highFootnotes:The etched decoration is comparable to that found on an armour made for Philip II (r. 1556-1598) in Augsburg by Desiderius Helmschmid in 1546 and etched by Ulrich Holzmann. Birdwood S & T Corps.); Naval General Service 1909-62, clasp: Persian Gulf 1909-1914 (CAPT. L. BIRDWOOD. I.A. H.M.S. PELORUS.,), impressed in serif capitals; 1914-15 Star (CAPT. R.L. BIRDWOOD, POL. DEPT.); British War and Victory Medals (CAPT. R.L. BIRDWOOD.); Delhi Durbar 1911, silver, unnamed as issued; mounted in a silver frame engraved with salient details of the recipient's career, medals all about extremely fine or better. Born 7th September 1879; attended Sandhurst; gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 27th July 1898; joined Indian Staff Corps 3rd November 1899; promoted Lieutenant 14th January 1901; served in the Tibet Expedition 1903-04; Promoted Captain 27th July 1907; Assistant Political Agent in the Persian Gulf; served with Indian Expeditionary Force 'D' in Mesopotamia and was killed in action at Basra 17th November 1914. The recipient came from a distinguished family of Indian Army officers, including his brother, Field Marshall Lord William Birdwood of Anzac. He served as assistant to the Gulf Resident Percy Cox from 1912, and BBM records only 14 Army recipients of the N.G.S. with this clasp, He was killed during the first phase of action of the Great War in the Gulf, an attack on Turkish forces near Fao at the mouth of the Shat-el-Arab. The I.E.F. 'D' War Diary for this period notes only one action, successful but costly, as having taken place on the 17th November 1914: "….we advanced 9 miles up the right back, enemy was encountered….entrenched…strength about 4,500 with 12 guns, enemy made determined resistance, his left flank was turned and his entrenchments carried…. I much regret our heavy losses, due to our advance being over open level plain, without cover, and to heavy rain which made surface impossible for rapid movement of men or horses.."
