Havell & Son, this edition published by The Ariel Press, London 1972In matching glazed frames,"The Goldfinch" 101.5cm x 76cm overall, the others 104.5cm x 71cm overall (4) (frames at fault) CONDITION REPORT:All four prints are framed under glass and have not been removed for inspection.  All show reasonably clean and bright colours, although these will have faded somewhat over time.  The Goldfinch, Grosbeak and Bunting prints all show reasonably even darkening of the paper, the Grosbeak and the Bunting being the darkest.  The Yellow Warbler shows more patchy darkening, with pale areas along the top edge and a pale stripe to the upper left quadrant of the image.

Havell & Son, this edition published by The Ariel Press, London 1972In matching glazed frames,"Passenger Pigeon" 101.5cm x 76cm overall, "Le Petit Caporal" and "White-crowned pigeon" each 104.5cm x 71cm overall, the others 71cm x 104.5cm overall (5) (frames at fault) CONDITION REPORT:All five prints are framed under glass and have not been removed for inspection.  The colours of all the prints are reasonably clean and bright, but will have faded somewhat over time.  The Passenger Pigeon and White-crowned Pigeon each show losses to the glass in the top right and top left corners respectively.  The paper in these areas has darkened significantly relative to the rest of the print.  Outside these areas, the paper has darkened somewhat over time.  The paper of the other prints has darkened to a lesser extent, and each shows a slight ripple to the paper.  The Passenger Pigeon shows an area of staining to the area behind the top bird.  The Willow Grouse shows an area of staining to the centre of the print.

Osgood, 1877Footnotes:Mr. Nightingale's Diary was written in first draft by Punch editor Mark Lemon, but substantially amended by Dickens in rehearsal, so much so it is considered a work very much his own. The cast for the first performance on 16 May 1851 included Dickens, Lemon and Thackeray. The text was privately printed for Dickens at the time, but is known in only a few copies worldwide, making this the first obtainable edition. This copy includes the etched frontispiece by F.W.
