Col. Charles Robert Douglas Gray, OBE was born on December 31 1909 in Peking, where his father, himself a colonel, was Medical Officer to the British Ambassador to China. Both during his time in the army and in retirement he was greatly interested in horses, eventually becoming director of the National Stud.
