SIR EDWIN LANDSEER INTEREST: Two autograph letters relating to Landseer’s “The Scotch Gillie”, the first: “I hereby warrant the following picture by the artist named “The Scotch Gillie by Sir Edwin Landseer R.A. It was in the possession of Mr John Ward of York, Sir Edwin Landseer’s friend & fellow pupil, til Mr. John Ward’s death”. Dated this day, May 25th 1878, J. B. Carlile. The second: “Liverpool, 4th October 1879-To Mr. Alfred Quilliam – Sir, In Consideration of you having this day purchased from me the picture entitled The Scotch Gillie, I hereby warrant that the picture is by Sir E. Landseer R. A. It was bought by me from Mr. J. B. Carlile of Scarboro – Yours truly, William Harme (?), witnessed by William Radlcliffe”.
