It appears that the British War Medal recipient initially enlisted after the outbreak of 3129 war PTE William Hirst Manchester REGT he was recorded as a deserter on 13th August 1914 and then re-enlisted on 3 September 1914 as 51420 DVR William Hirst Royal Engineers.
