King Charles II: A letter dated: Brussels, 28 th . May, 1658 (where he held his court from Feb. 1658 to Dec. 1659). The letter is addressed to Alderman Ellis and on the reverse is written: “I do acknowleg to have received (from) Ellis Esquire Alderman of Lo(ndon) the sum of fifty pounds sterling wit(h) this 30 th . June 1658, Jo Stephens” Sir John Stephens has been a companion of the king when in exile. The letter reads: I am soe much informed of your good affection to me, that I cannot doubt of your readiness to assist me with the loane of fifty pounds…. Signed: your affectionate friende Charles R. (the typed transcription is loosely inserted). Stained, and the top left corner is missing; small holes to the folds.

Hill & Sons, Length of back 71cm, upper bouts 32cm, middle bouts 22.5cm, lower bouts 41cm wide, Numerous old repairsProvenance - Margherita Tedeschi (d. 1986), a music teacher; thence by family descent. Her brother Guido was a luthier. Possibly Miss R. Backhouse (Blackhouse?) inscribed 'Miss R. Backhouse 1768' on a W. E. Hill & Sons label applied to a brown paper sleeve, presumably for a bow, found inside the case.
