Darling (Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph). A collection of five printed letters, pamphlets and reports relating to Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Darling, Governor of New South Wales, 1824-31, comprising: Letter Addressed by Lieut.-Gen. R. Darling, Late Governor of New South Wales to Joseph Hume, esq. M.P., 1st edition, 1832, 48 pages, a little minor spotting front and rear, sewn as issued, 8vo (Ferguson II, 1528), together with Lieut.-Gen. Darling's Remarks on the Petition of Robert Robison, Late a Captain in His Majesty's Service Presented to the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, March 27th 1833, 8 pages printed in double column, a little light toning, old folds, sewn, 4to (Ferguson II, 1638), plus The Case of Lieut.-General Ralph Darling; as Connected with the Libel of Mr. Robert Robison, 1838, 27 pages, sewn, 8vo, with two others: Remarks on the Libel Published by Mr. Robert Robison, Late of the New South Wales Veteran Companies against Lieut.-Gen. R. Darling. And of which, Mr. Robinson was Convicted in the Court of King's Bench, on the 11th of December 1834, before the Chief Justice, Lord Denman, and a Special Jury, 1835 (9 pages, Ferguson II, 1946) and Report from Select Committee on the Conduct of General Darling, while Governor of New South Wales, 1 September, 1835 (4 pages, old folds, not in Ferguson) Rare group of publications relating to Darling's controversial rule in the colony. During his time as Governor in New South Wales, Darling gained a reputation as a tough disciplinarian, in particular his treatment two soldiers, Joseph Sudds and Patrick Thompson, who being convicted of theft were assigned to a chain gang, leading to the death of Sudds, who unbeknown to Darling had an underlying medical condition. On his return to England in 1832, a House of Commons Select Committee held an inquiry into his conduct, prompted by Darling's chief accusers Robison and Hume, Robison found guilty of libelling Darling, the Committee exonerating Darling of any blame in 1835.
