Jamaica.- Slavery.- Royal Gazette (The) vol.3 only, numbers 90 (supplement only)-138, together 47 issues, each bound with accompanying supplement issue, damp-staining, some light worm-holing, numbers 90-92 worn with loss to text in lower right corner, some marginal tearing, some spotting or foxing, defective with loss of numerous pages (number 138 detached and loosely inserted), contemporary calf spine only (lacking covers), worn, 4to, Jamaica, by D. Douglass & W. Aikman, 1781.⁂ An important but dark fragment of 18th century American history of slavery, covering the period January 1781 to December 1781. These 47 issues of the weekly Jamaican newspaper contain news from the American colonies and Britain through extracts from the London Gazette. Reports on all the major battles relating to The War of Independence feature, including mentions of Washington's army, and the movements of General Cornwallis. Other highlights include a circular address to the rebel colonists from loyalists, a detailed description on the prisoner exchange with the French, and copies of letters from commanders. Also included are over 700 adverts for slaves - either 'Runaway', 'Taken Up', or 'To Be Sold', with given names and physical descriptions, as well as accompanying wood-cut vignettes: "Kingston, July 20, 1781 | Ran Away last night, from on board a Vessel in this Harbour, a Negro Fellow named Tom, but calls himself Tom Dickson: marked on his back, shoulders and breast R x F; is about 5ft4" high, has an impediment in his speech, and has lost his fore teeth, owing to a shot in his mouth..." Charles II (King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, 1630-85) Licence signed "Charles R" and countersigned "Arlington" to Samuel Barton, allowing him "a room or rooms" in his house in Hellingly, Sussex "to be a place for the Use of Such as do not conform to the Church of England, who are of the Persuasion commonly called "presbyterien", D.s., printed form with manuscript insertions, inscribed at tail "Bartons house", laid down on linen, small tears in 1 corner, folds, browned, framed and glazed, [Wing C3610N; lists 2 copies only both located in the National Archives], document 230 x 323mm., Whitehall, 9th December 1672.⁂ Extremely scarce. ESTC list 3 variants of this document with a total of four copies known, all located in The National Archives.Samuel Barton (d. 1710), labelled here as a presbyterian, had been a churchwarden in the 1650s, and lived in a house called Carter's Corner Place in Hellingly, in the Cuckmere Valley. In 1679 Barton sold his house, owned by generations of his family, to his brother-in-law George Luxford, Sheriff of Sussex, possibly because of crippling fines for his nonconformity. In 1672, Charles II promulgated the Declaration of Indulgence, an attempt to extend religious tolerance to nonconformists and Roman Catholics. It was withdrawn by the king in 1673, under pressure from parliament, and was replaced by the first of the Test Acts. The acts prohibited people who were not proved members of the Church of England from holding public office, and prescribing penal laws for recusants and nonconformists.

Birds.- Delacour (Jean) The Pheasants of the World, one of 100 special copies signed by the author, with additional hand-coloured frontispiece by Timothy Greenwood, this copy with a signed original pencil drawing of a blood pheasant by R. David Digby mounted at front, colour plates and illustrations by J. C. Harrison and R. David Digby,original full green morocco, gilt, covers slightly marked and spine slightly faded, Spur Publications, 1977; and 3 bound volumes containing the first 12 Journals of The World Pheasant Association, two with long presentation inscriptions, bound in red half morocco, gilt, 1975-87, 4to and 8vo (4)⁂ Only 3 copies in existence, all of which owned by founders of the Royal Pheasant Association. Includes original drawing by Ron Digby of a Blood Pheasant, drawn especially for Major Iain Grahame, the first person in the first person in the world to capture and breed this species.

Mathematics.- Adams (George) Geometrical and graphical essays, containing a description of the mathematical instruments used in geometry, civil and military surveying, levelling and perspective, first edition, engraved frontispiece and 32 folding plates by Lodge after Milne, a few tables in text, ink signature to title and occasional initialled notes or marginalia of a Robert Hicks (seemingly of Bath, or certainly resident there at the time of study), plate 32 split at a fold, with a short tear at foot and trimmed just within border at outer edge, with loss of 2 numbers of pagination and outer border, occasional offsetting or spotting, lightly browned, contemporary half calf, spine gilt, corners worn, covers scuffed, rubbed, a sold copy, 8vo, printed for the author by R. Hindmarsh, Printer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, No. 32, Clerkenwell-Close, 1791.⁂ George Adams, the younger, was mathematical instrument maker to the king, and optician to the Prince of Wales. Pages 486-500 comprise 'A catalogue of mathematical and philosophical instruments, made and sold by George Adams', with printed prices.

The first mentioned is the first edition of 'a full description of Davy's wire-gauze lamp ... and a preliminary account of his researches on flame' (Norman).

Ballantyne (Robert Michael, author, 1825-94) Erling the Bold a tale of The Norse Sea-Kings, autograph manuscript signed, title, 2pp. of preface and 386pp., numerous corrections, slightly browned, later ink inscription on fly-leaf: "Given me by J.G. Ballantyne (son of R.M. Ballantyne) March 1927 H.N. Bonar", early 20th century buckram, red morocco label on spine, edges uncut, 8vo, "RMB July...", 1869. ⁂ Ballantyne's "principal achievement was his corpus of tales of manly boys in exotic locations, tales which opened to young readers the imperial prospect of a wide world to explore and exploit. Following the lead of Marryat and other previous writers, Ballantyne adapted the Robinson Crusoe model for Victorian boys and influenced subsequent Scottish writers such as R. L. Stevenson, who admired as a boy Ballantyne's works and their author, 'an exceedingly good-looking, dark, full-bearded man' (Stevenson, 226) he later acknowledged in the verses prefacing Treasure Island (1883)." - Oxford DNB.

[Hill (Robert)] The Contents of scripture: containing the sum of euery booke and chapter of the old and new Testament. Gathered from Tremelius, Iunius, Beza, Piscator, and others, title within ornate woodcut architectural border, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, Z12 blank, lacking initial blank, title closely trimmed / frayed and soiled, sigs. R and S in part 1 and c in part 2 misbound, but complete, R10 upper corner torn away and loosely inserted, sig. e at end upper corners frayed with loss of text, some water-staining, heavier at end, rudimentary binding of contemporary sheep, split to head of spine, but holding firm, creased, [STC 13478], 12mo, Printed by A. Islip, for R. Iackson, 1596.⁂ Provenance: 'Thomas Rolf his Booke god grant e may often in it looke 1637...' (ink inscription to blank Z12). A Thomas Rolf was the son of Pochahontas and John Rolfe. However, although he signed certain Virginian patents, we have been unable to trace a copy of his signature, as the originals of these were destroyed on an annual basis until the 19th century, being replaced with clerk copies.

ESTC lists only the Wellcome copy and one at University of Wisconsin-Madison. The second concerns the health, manners and education of children, advising regular meals including small beer.

*** Please note, the description of this lot has changed.Drink.- Boydell (James) The Ullage Cask Gauger, comprised in a series of tables..., first edition, author's signature of authentication on Advertisement at end of Preface (as usual), with additional leaf 'To the Public' explaining the accuracy of the tables tipped in following Advertisement (small stain), title browned at margins, one or two spots, contemporary tree calf, gilt, rubbed, joints split, spine ends and corners worn, by R. and H.Causton...for the Author, 1784; and another on brewing, 8vo (2)⁂  Rare guide to calculating ullage, the airspace between wine and the top of its container (either cask or bottle), by a former wine merchant. This new guide for casks was intended for the wholesale wine trade, and was particularly useful for taking inventory and for controlling pillage. One section is specifically intended for use in the trade in whale oil, which due to the growth of the Arctic whaling industry in the 1750s was imported into England in increasing quantities. The work was later reprinted in the 19th century by Henry Kent Causton.ESTC lists only 6 copies in the UK (none in Oxford or Cambridge) and 4 others (3 in America).

Overall grey finish - 142cm long, 18cm beam, overall height to mast top 46cm. Mounted on a wood display plinth & encased in a perspex display case. The Original Liberty Ship " SS Francis J. O'Hara" was built 06/1945 in Panama FL as a Liberty type Steam Ship, acquired by the US Navy in 1956 and converted to a "Guardian Class Radar Picket Ship"She served in the North Atlantic as part of The Early Warning Line.  Complement >> 13 Officers / 138 Enlisted Scrapped 1971.
