A George II sugar bowl James Mitchell 1750 - 1751 Edinburgh, Assay Master Hugh Gordon, the deep hemispherical bowl with everted scalloped rim with chased foliate scroll details and running flower head borders, raised on a stepped domed foot 13cm diameter, 8oz Note: As with the marks of John Main and James Mitchelson there has long been confusion with the attribution of this maker`s mark. It is now firmly ascribed to James Mitchell. James Mitchell`s marks along with James Welsh are the only maker`s marks in Scotland to include a figure within the punch. It has long been debated what these figures are holding, a bag of coinage, precious metal, or tool of the craft, There seems little doubt it does signify a connection with the craft and trade. References: `Compendium of Scottish Silver II` R & J Dietert, illustrated plate 7, listed page 61
A pair of George II candlesticks by James Kerr, Edinburgh 1745 - 1746, Assay Master Hugh Gordon, the simple socket sconces above facetted and knopped baluster stems, raised on domed quatrefoil bases with spiralled shell decoration to corners, on stepped rim (2) 20cm high, 11.5cm wide at base, 17.5oz and 18.5oz each Notes: The survival of cast George II Scottish candle sticks is unusually small, when compared to the much larger survival of English examples. One theory for this has always been that Scottish makers would have retailed these types of wares rather than made them, so they would carry the mark of their English maker rather than Scottish retailer. With the rise of specialist candlestick makers south of the border it seems a credible explanation. However the style, proportion and decoration of these sticks is rather unusual and definitely points to a Scottish design and manufacture. The fluid spiralled shell details to the bases and proportions of the slender stems, while reminiscent of English examples is rather quirky in its designs, so there is little doubt these were made in Scotland rather than just retailed. The placement of the marks to the underside of the plain foot rim in the domed angles is obviously trying to mirror that of English examples but the thin applied foot rim allows little space and the marks are often off struck. While James Ker would be an obvious candidate for retailing English wares (with his family and political connections in London) he is by the same token a very likely candidate to have made them being perhaps Edinburgh`s premier goldsmith of the era. A George II cream boat James Mitchell, Edinburgh 1740 - 1740, Assay Master Dougal Ged, of shaped oval outline with slightly baluster body, the everted scalloped rim with chased scroll and flower designs, the wide spout with lattice and scale border flanking shell motif, with leaf capped S scroll handle and raised on three paw feet with trefoil terminals 19cm long, 7oz Note: As with the marks of John Main and James Mitchelson there has long been confusion with the attribution of this maker`s mark. A George II mug by Dougal Ged, Edinburgh 1734 - 1735, Assay Master Archibald Ure, the body of slight baluster form with slightly flared rim and engraved crest and motto, resting on a socle foot, with simple S scroll handle with plain thumb piece 7.5cm high, 4.5oz Heraldry: with crest and motto of VIRTUTI FORTUNA COMES Fortune is the attendant of virtue for MAYNE of Powis and Logie, Clackmannanshire, derived from the MAINS of Lochwood, co.
