Pair of British Officers Binoculars Sait to Have Been Used by Lieutenant General Sir Frederick Browning, Commander of the Airborne Division at the Battle of Arnhem, the binoculars are a standard pair of officers binoculars made by Ross, London and originally issued to R M E Reaves Leicestershire regiment, with the case having his details impressed to the lid and details scratched to the body of the binoculars. They are accompanied by a handwritten letter from the child of Reaves, ‘This pair of Ross binoculars were, I believe standard army issue to commissioned officers in the 1914-1918 war. When hostilities ceased, he was permitted to keep them. These binoculars saw service on the Western Front and again at Gallipoli. At a government request for all items of use in warfare, he surrendered them in 1940. He took the case to have his name and address stamped. Never thinking that he would see them again, his delight was incredible when he received them, together with a letter of thanks from General Browning, C.O of the Airborne Division (husband of the novelist Daphne du Maurier) and he has used them during the landings at Arnhem. Since coming into my hands, they have been used for more peaceful and recreational activities’. The letter is signed and letter has printed address in Gloucestershire. We have not been able to confirm or deny the history mentioned in this letter.General Sir Frederick Browning was probably the most important officer in the history of the British Airborne forces. During WW2 Browning commanded the 1st Airborne Division and I Airborne Corps and was also the deputy commander of First Allied Airborne Army during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. During the planning for this operation, he was alleged to have said: "I think we might be going a bridge too far." In December 1944 he became Chief of Staff of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten’s South East Asia Command. From September 1946 to January 1948, he was Military Secretary of the War Office.
Ca. 600-800 AD.A bronze finger ring boasting a round hoop, meticulously crafted with a flat inside and a rounded outside, ensuring both comfort and style. The shoulders of the ring are adorned with incised patterns, intricately carved to enhance its visual appeal. At the centre of the ring's round-shaped bezel, a cross motif takes prominence, captivating the viewer's attention. The cross, an emblem rich in symbolism, holds deep significance within Byzantine culture and Christianity. The wearer of such a ring could display their allegiance to the Christian faith, aligning themselves with the values and teachings of Christianity. Hattatt, A Visual Catalogue Of Ancient Brooches, p. 308-309. Size: L:55mm / W:20mm ; 10g Provenance: Private London collection, pre-2000s.
