RPC I 2201; RSC 2; CRI 262; BMCRR East 133. 12.01g, 27mm, 12h. Very Fine. Toned. Following the death of Octavia's first husband C. Claudius Marcellus in 40 BC, her marriage to Antony sought to seal the Pact of Brundisium in which it had been agreed that Octavian would assume control of the west and Antony of the east. The striking of this type cements the agreement before the people of Ephesus, an important city, later made the capital of Asia Minor by Augustus in 27 BC. Octavia spent two winters with Antony in Athens and in 37 BC assisted in securing the Triumvirate for another 5 years at the Pact of Tarentum. Following this, Antony returned to the east and, having left Octavia behind, lived with Cleopatra in Egypt. Although they divorced in 32 BC, after Antony's defeat at the Battle of Actium and subsequent suicide, Octavia raised all of his surviving children by Fulvia and Cleopatra, along with her own.

RIC 267; RSC 648b; BMCRE 486. 3.22g, 19mm, 6h. Very Fine. Built by Trajan at his own expense and commemorated with an arch at its beginning in Beneventum, as well as on his coinage, the Via Traiana was a quicker route for travellers from Rome to Brundisium on the coast. At 205 miles, despite being two miles longer than the Via Appia, the Via Traiana was a much less arduous and therefore faster option than the original Republican road because it traversed a significantly flatter route to the north. Strabo, in his Geography (6.3.7), indicates that the route of the Via Traiana, even though in his day little more than a mule track, saved the traveller a whole day's journeying.

Diocletian Æ Quinarius. Siscia, AD 294-295. DIOCLETIANVS AVG, laureate head right / VTILITAS PVBLICA, Utilitas standing facing, head left, with hands folded within drapery; SIS in exergue. RIC -, cf. Rome 48 (R in ex.) & Ticinum 27a (T in ex.). 1.10g, 15mm, 12h. Very Fine. Rev. somewhat corroded. Seemingly unpublished in the standard references. Known from the mints of Rome and Ticinum, the types seen on this quinarius had not until now been thought to have been struck at Siscia at all. Indeed, RIC lists only laureate fractions for Maximian and Galerius as having been struck at this mint, with reverse types of Mars and Aequitas (though this latter bears the same rev. legend) as the present piece). That we have now this reverse type represented at Siscia should come as little surprise.
