CIRCLE OF SIR PETER LELY (BRITISH 1618-1680) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, TRADITIONALLY IDENTIFIED AS LOUISE DE KEROUAILLE, DUCHESS OF PORTSMOUTH, THREE-QUARTER LENGTH, IN A PLUM COLOURED DRESS AND BLUE SHAWL, HOLDING A SHELL, SEATED IN A LANDSCAPE WITH A CASTLE BEYOND Oil on canvas 127 x 102cm (50 x 40 in.) Provenance: The Hon. Mrs Ernest Guinness and by descent to her daughter The Hon. Mrs Aileen Plunket, Luttrellstown Castle, Clonsilla, Co. Christie's house sale, Dublin, 26-28 September 1983, lot 504 The sitter has traditionally been identified as Louise de Kerouaille. She bares a close resemblance to the sitter in the portrait catalogued by Becket as being of the Duchess of Portsmouth (R. B. Becket, Lely, London 1951, no. 421). This portrait, now in the Tate Gallery (no. T00755) is however now thought to be of Margaret Hughes (d. 1719), the actress and mistress to Prince Rupert. Condition Report: The canvas has been lined and this has caused the surface around the framing edges to become uneven, particularly at the lower left edge. Rubbings, abrasions, and surface scratches throughout. Re-varnished and cleaned. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching throughout including an old repair to the sitter's dress in the lower right quadrant (approx. 5cm). There is also a green cloudy varnish which may be concealing further retouching. Condition Report Disclaimer

SIR EDWIN HENRY LANDSEER (BRITISH 1802-1873) THE ARREST OF THE FALSE HERALD, FROM SIR WALTER SCOTT'S 'QUENTIN DURWARD' Pencil and watercolour Signed and dated 1831 (lower left) and signed with initials, dated 1831 and indistinctly inscribed (lower right) 20 x 16.7cm (7¾ x 6½ in.) Provenance: Dickinson, London Engraved: By R. Graves and published by Robert Cadell and Moon, Boys and Graves, 1831 This is the original watercolour for an engraving illustrating a scene from Scott's `Quentin Durward.' It illustrates the lines: `At length the speed of the pseudo herald could save him no longer from the fangs of his pursuers: they seized him, pulled him down, and would probably soon have throttled him.' Quentin Durward was first published in 1823 and tells the story of a Scottish archer in the service of the French King Louis XI. Landseer met Scott on his first visit to Scotland in 1824 with the painter C.R. Leslie. They sailed to Leith before travelling to the Highlands ending at Scott's house Abbotsford where they spent a week. The trip sparked a lifelong love of Scotland in Landseer and he and Scott became firm friends. The two were often compared in the public mind with Landseer being dubbed `the Walter Scott of painting' by The Times.

King George had the distinction of taking the Greek throne before his father who was to become King Christian IX of Denmark. His nomination was supported by the Great Powers of Russia, France and Great Britain. When King George I sailed into Athens in 1863, he said 'my strength is in the love of my people'. In his accession speech, the King declared 'in these modern days, Princes must strive to be superior in intellect, knowledge and goodness to those around them'. A born democrat, King George supported the constitutional monarchy and swiftly mastered Greek as well as national sports such as wrestling and running. He established the modern Olympic Games in Athens and opened the summer games in 1896. His endeavours to endear himself to his people earned him the moniker 'Father of the Nation' and King George reigned for almost fifty-years.The King decided to abdicate in favour of his heir Constantine in 1913 after celebrating his Golden Jubilee. Tragically, on a visit to Greece's second city, Thessaloniki, in March 1913 he was shot through the heart at point blank range by a Socialist anarchist called Alexandros Schinas. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Balbino's workshop was the main supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, and its silverware is present in the collection of the Royal Palace Museum (Turin) and the Quirinale Palace (President of the Italian Republic) in Rome. The firm participated in the 'Esposizione dei Prodotti dell'Industria' (Turin, 1838) and in the 'Esposizione Nazionale di Torino' (Turin, 1858)The armorial shows that this silver inkstand was most likely made for the household of Prince Charles Albert of Savoy (1798-1849), otherwise known as Charles Albert (Carlo Alberto) of Sardinia-Piedmont. He was born at the Palazzo Carignano in Turin on the 2nd of October 1798, to Charles Emmanuel, the Prince of Carignano and Maria Cristina of Saxony. His father was the great-great-great-grandson of Thomas Francis, Prince of Carignano, youngest legitimate son of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, and founder of the Carignano line of the Royal House of Savoy. Prince Charles Albert became King of Sardinia in 1831 on the death of his distant cousin Charles Felix, who had no heir. As King, after an initial conservative period during which he supported various European legitimist movements, he adopted the idea of a federal Italy, led by the Pope and freed from the House of Habsburg in 1848. In the same year he granted the Albertine Statute, the first Italian constitution, which remained in force until 1947.In 1817, in Florence, Charles Albert married Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, Princess of Hungary and Bohemia (1801-1855), who was the daughter of Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Princess Luisa of Naples and Sicily. On Charles Albert's abdication, their first-born son ruled as Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia-Piedmont (r. 1849–1861) and as first King of the unified Kingdom of Italy (r. 1861–1878).LiteratureVittorio Donaver, Roberto Dabbene, Argenti Italiani dell-Ottocento, volume II punzoni dei argentieri Italiani, Milano 1989, p. 77, n. 166.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
