Obverse: three pillars, linked by a chain and surmounted by a cross, a harp and a thistle, star/mullet initial mark followed by 'TVHS · VNITED · INVINCIBLE' around, no letter under the pillars. Reverse: ship sailing leftwithin a rope circle, mullet initial mark ' AND GOD DIRECT OVRCOVRS' around. Weight: 4.56g. Diameter: 22mm. Grade: aVF - rich, attractive brown tone with one flat spot to the edge, no other real issues for around Very Fine. Comes with an old ticket. While this piece dates from Oliver Cromwell's reign as Lord Protector it does not feature his portrait, unlike some other coins and patterns of the period. Numismatists attribute the design of this pattern Farthing to a moneyer named David Ramage, whose 'R' initial is seen on other variants. Ramage's engravings meet the challenge of designing copper coinage without a royal portriat by incorporating straightforward puritan symbols. The three pillars represent the three kingdoms: England, Scotland and Ireland. The ship represents the state, sailing on a fair Protestant wind. The strident English inscriptions - 'Thus united invincible and God directs our course' - are typical of the interregnum period, professing the righteousness of the Commonwealth government.

Scotland, 1601 James VI gold Sword And Sceptre/120 Shilling (S 5460). Obverse: crowned royal arms of Scotland within a beaded circle, quatrefoil mintmark, '· IACOBVS · 6 · D · G · R . SCOTORVM ·'. Reverse: crossed sword and sceptre with crown and thistles between, the date (1601) below, quatrefoil initial mark above and '· SALVS · POPVLI · SVPREMA · LEX ·' around. Weight: 4.8g. Diameter: 28mm. Grade: gF - good Fine with minor edge clipping and a historic crease. This scarce Scottish issue was only struck at the Edinburgh mint in the years 1601 to 1604. These coins date to the years immediately before James VI ascended the English throne as James I, uniting his two kingdoms in a personal rule. James' Scottish coinage, issued after the union of the crowns, shows the quartered arms of England, Scotland and Ireland, while these earlier hammered gold pieces show only the lion of Scotland on the obverse.

Bill Davies led a very successful career as an architect, primarily working in his native Wales, with his most celebrated project being the Plas Menai complex situated on the Menai Strait which serves as the National Watersports Centre for Wales and has been awarded Grade II and II* status - it was described as 'arguably the most admired and influential building completed in Wales in the last quarter of the twentieth century’ by Professor Richard Weston*. Bill was also commissioned for architectural work by Cardiff University and indeed served as a Lecturer in Design at the institution, playing a major part in developing the course into one of the highest rated in the United Kingdom.His major inspirations were the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the leading Finnish designer Alvar Aalto: from this stemmed Bill's enthusiasm for all aspects of mid-century design with the glass of Scandinavia becoming his particular passion, or rather, obsession.
