Twenty years later, he took on research on Bomberg, publishing a Royal College Monograph on the artist in 1981, all the while painting full time. He was a wise and elderly satyr known for his association with the god of wine, Dionysus (Bacchus in Roman mythology). Often depicted as an older, jovial figure, Silenus was revered for his wisdom and knowledge of the natural world. Ca. AD 100-300.A red stone intaglio engraved with a left-facing portrait of Mercury (Greek Hermes), the god of communication, travel, trade, and theft. His head is flanked by caduceus staffs, one to each side. A gold posy ring, circa 1600-1640, the broad band decorated to the exterior with diagonal bands with ribbed beading between, the interior inscribed in capitals ‘I LIKE MY CHOIES’, diameter 22mm, width 6mm, ring size R. £1,000-£1,400 --- Provenance: Ex UK collection. According to a PMI test on the XRF analyzer, the gold is testing as purity 86.52%. This was a popular posy - it can be seen on various other posy rings including examples in the British Museum (ref. 1961,1202.29, 1961.1202.32, and 1961,1202.37), Griffin Collection (Inv. nos. 01893 and 03034) and the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Condition Report In very fine condition with minimal wear. Weight 6.87gm.
