A Genuine 'Fake' Leica IIIb, Made (Unofficially) in The Reid & Sigrist Factory. In the course of his extensive Reid research, in the mid to late 1980s John Vincent recorded interviews with several ex-R&S employees, resulting in hundreds of pages of transcriptions and notes. Several ex-employees supplied John with 'left-over' parts, 'liberated' work-in-progress items and even prototypes. Some just told him tales of what went on behind-the-scenes during their time in the factory. A story started to emerge that at least one employee (un-named) was actually making 'Leicas' in his lunch breaks.Obviously the Reid & Sigrist factory had practically all the parts need to assemble a 'Leica' readily to hand, along with high-quality engraving facilities (see lot 366F etc). It seems this person made 'several' examples (exact number unknown) and had a lucrative side-line supplying them to a well-known camera shop. These cameras are difficult to identify with just a few tell-tale signs they are not genuine Leicas, such as the design of the shutter release, an obviously English baseplate engraving, the design of the slow speed dial etc. It is not known if the serial numbers used to create these cameras relate to those of genuine Leicas. This example is marked with serial number 350713. (shutter blinds slightly ceased, fires OK on fast speeds, slow/sticky blinds on slow speeds, hence condition 5H). Fitted with a Leitz 5cm f3.5 Elmar lens #826047 (slight cleaning marks, condition 5F) with cap and comes in an un-named ERC. Also included is John's genuine Leica IIIb #280716 (condition 4/5F). Fitted with a Leitz 5cm f3.5 Elmar lens #1426916 (slight cleaning marks, condition 5F) with cap and comes in Leitz ERC. (JVC).
