(3) Provenance: Joseph Everett Dutton (1874 - 1905) Joseph Dutton died at Kasongo, D R Congo in 1905 at the aged of 29, whose work contributed significantly to the understanding of west African trypanosomiasis and African `tick fever.`

Broché, couverture rempliée.{CR}{CR}Édition illustrée d’une grande composition en couleurs sur la couverture, de 5 compositions en noir dont une sur le titre, d’un en-tête et d’une lettrine en couleurs, ainsi que d’un frontispice et de 3 hors-texte, le tout d’après les compositions de Georges ROCHEGROSSE. Le frontispice a été gravé par Mme Rita Dreyfus, les autres planches en couleurs par Georges Beltrand. Les figures en noir ont été gravées par R. Blot.{CR}Tirage à 675 exemplaires numérotés, celui-ci étant l’un des 25 sur papier de Hollande, contenant quatre états des illustrations.{CR}Exemplaire parfaitement conservé, enrichi de 3 L.A.S. de Rochegrosse adressées à l’éditeur Ferroud, portant sur cette publication mais également sur Astarté et sur le Puits de Sainte Claire :{CR}- 19 mars 1925, 4 pages in- 16 : Il regrette le travail du texte chiffré qui était sur le dos de la première couverture du Scarabée, il lui semble que “cela ne fait pas bien du tout - cela allourdit le verso et ne s’arrange pas (…) avec l’ensemble - il vaut mieux en faire son deuil”. Il a du interrompre les “aquarelles faux titres du Puits de Ste Claire” et s’y remettra dès qu’il aura terminé l’aquarelle demandée pour Astarté, etc.{CR}- 29 juin 1925, 2 pages in- 16 : “Je me suis mis, dès le reçu du petit mot qui accompagnait le mandat, à relire les contes d’Edgar Poe et si je trouve quelque chose, je vous le dirai aussitôt. Ce sera en tous cas forcément un peu plus court que le Scarabée, car si je ne me trompe, le Scarabée est le plus long des deux séries des “Histoires Extraordinaires”. Il attend les épreuves du Puits et de la couverture du Scarabée : “j’attends toujours tout cela, le pinceau et le crayon en l’air…”{CR}- 2 novembre (1925), 8 pages in- 12 : Belle et longue lettre concernant la rémunération de son travail. Ferroud lui a envoyé un livre qu’il veut faire aquareller par l’artiste : “Avec tout ce que vous demandez pour les 3 contes d’Edgar Poe me voilà un fameux tas de travail sur la planche… Mais, comme vous le savez je ne “boude” pas sur le turbin!… et comme vous dites, le travail c’est la liberté… Seulement cher Monsieur Ferroud, si c’est la liberté, faut pas que ça soit la ruine… Or, le prix que vous m’offrez pour une pareille somme de turbin… c’est à peu près la dite ruine”. Il demande “au bas mot un billet de mille…” {CR}Il poursuit avec les illustrations des 3 contes d’Edgar Poe et de Thaïs.
