Shakespeare (William) Measure for Measure, or Beauty the Best Advocate, [adapted by Charles Gildon], half-title with publisher's advertisements in double column verso, contemporary ink pen trials to half-title (some trimmed), lacking final f., title little chipped, closely trimmed at head, spotted and stained, lightly browned, 20th century burgundy ?textured buckram-backed brown marbled boards, spine gilt, covers with gilt Signet arms, rubbed, [Bartlett 182; Wing S2936], small 4to, Printed for D. Brown, at the Black Swan without Temple-Bar; and R. Parker, at the Unicorn Under the Royal-Exchange, 1700. *** This first edition of Charles Gildon's adaptation is the first separate edition of the play in any form. It is rare at auction, with only two appearances since 1980. 'Davenant first combined portions of Measure for Measure and Much Ado and called the play Law against Lovers. This appeared in 1673. Gildon took from this the portions which had been taken from Measure for Measure, altered them somewhat, [and] added four musical entertainments' (Bartlett). Includes the epilogue ‘Shakespeares Ghost’.
Nayler (George) The Coronation of his most Sacred Majesty King George the Fourth, 42 fine hand-colour aquatint plates after Stephanoff, Chalon, Pugin, Wild and others, 3 plain plates, plate-guards, large bookplate of Sir William Stirling-Maxwell to front pastedown, contemporary half morocco with Stirling-Maxwell monogramme to upper cover, corners a spine rubbed and scuffed, g.e., [Abbey Scenery 260; Bobins II, 694; Tooley 343], large folio, R. Clay for Henry George Bohn, 1837.*** Handsome depiction of the coronation, the last coronation to hold the coronation banquet in Westminster Hall. Five parts were originally proposed, two were issued, in 1823/4 and 1827. Bohn acquired the plates and combined them with Whittaker's to produce the work of 1837 & 1839.
Horses.- Tacquet (Jean) Philippica ou Haras de cheuaux, engraved title (torn, repaired and laid down with some loss to margins and possibly obscuring text on verso), engraved portrait (torn at head and laid down), double- and single-page plate, large folding plate dissected with text laid down on rear endpapers and image (with repaired tear) tipped in, bookplate of Sir William Stirling to front pastedown, later vellum, yapp edges, some staining, 4to, Antwerp, R. Bruneau, 1614.*** Rare first edition of the first work on horse breeding and management of stud farms in French.
Astronomy.- Regiomontanus (Johannes Müller) Kalendarium, 25ff. (of 26, lacking final blank) plus 2ff. woodcut diagrams at end, printed in red and black including 30 diagrams of eclipses, woodcut initials, the 4 full-page woodcuts of astronomical instruments at end pasted together and mounted later to form 2 stiff cards, one with 2 ?later volvelles, woodcuts defective and missing portions supplied in facsimile, some lower corners of text leaves repaired, early ink annotations in red, some soiling and staining, modern buckram, 4to (199 x 138mm.), Augsburg, Erhard Ratdolt, 1499.*** The last incunable edition of Regiomontanus' Latin calendar, first published in 1474. Collates the same as the copy in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek but the middle woodcut initial on b7r is different and the upper volvelle has a different central decoration (the latter suggesting the volvelles might both be later additions to this copy).Provenance: Gilbert R.
