Harold John Wilde Gilman, (Rode, Somerset 1876 - London 1919) - Oil on board - 'Artist's brother bathing', a young naked boy about to dive into the water at Romney Marshes, unsigned (but see provenance note below), 26.5cm x 20.5cm, framed Entitled to plain typewritten label, which is inscribed as follows: "Provenance: H.G.'s brother from whom Agnew's purchased it - he sent a letter to Joll of Agnew's saying the boy is his young brother Gordon; scene Romney Marsh (his father was Rector of Snargate) probably 1904 / 05" Second label beneath: Thos. Agnew & Sons Ltd. Inventory number 21338, over pouch with handwritten letter from the artist's aforementioned brother, transcibed below: Hillside, Mill Hill, Kingsnorth, Ashford, Kent 27.1.1961 A lot of this may be of no interest to your client, so pass on to him only what you consider relevant. Dear Joll I am very happy to supply details some of which I hope may be of interest to the purchaser of the painting of my young brother in his birthday suit.I was away in China from 1900 to 1914 but am fairly sure that the painting was executed circa 1904/1905 when my young brother was still a boy at Hurstpierpoint. It was certainly painted in Romney Marsh, + I suspect that the bathing place was either in the Royal Military Canal or one of the larger dykes nearby the Rectory at Snargate. Gordon Edward Charles Rowland Gilman (the subject of the painting) was the youngest son of my father the Rev. John Gilman who was Rector of Snargate + Snave, Romney Marsh for 28 years. Snargate is historical in that the Ingoldsby Legends were written there by a former Rector, Barham I think. Harold Gilman (the painter) was the 2nd son and, as you doubtless know, fell victim to the ‘flu that swept England and elsewhere in 1918/1919. He contracted this whilst nursing a brother painter Charles Ginner.Gordon Gilman went into the Army after school and later joined the Essex Regiment. He left the Army later on and joined a firm of Engineers who were the pioneers of Asphalt roads which revolutionised road construction and now carry our enormous traffic.I was with my brother in Trafalgar Square the night war was declared in August 1914, and, at 5 o’clock the same morning, we were on our way by car to Romney Marsh to break the news to our parents that we were joining up. He went into the R. N. A. S. (Royal Naval Air Service) and I the Honourable Artillery Co., and we were both in France in the thick of it by the middle of Sept. 1914. He was eventually commissioned in the R. E. and I in the Machine Gun Corps and, having miraculously escaped death, we were both demobilised in Feb 1919. Curiously enough he began the war and I ended it in armoured cars! My brother Gordon ended up as a Staff Captain with a M. C. Croix de Guerre and Mention in Despatches to his credit. On the outbreak of war in 1939 my brother dropped everything and joined the Royal Engineers and it was in 1942 (April) that he unhappily suffered a cerebral stroke and died instantly. He was, at that time, Major in command of a Company of R.E. He was a fine and very gallant soldier. I have dug out, and enclose, a snap of my brother taken outside Snargate Rectory when he was a Subaltern in the Essex Regiment. I also enclose another photo of him taken shortly after his demob. in 1919, and your client is welcome to those if of any interest.I reached the age of 80 last week, and though ‘mens sana in corpore sano’ I do not like the cold wind!Best wishes, hoping you are well. Yours sincerely Gilman * Many thanks for the charming reproduction you sent me at Christmas. This is one I shall keep! * I have no photo taken in the last war to complete the sequence. Harold Gilman was one of seven children born to Emily Purcell Gulliver and John Gilman, Curate of Rode, Somerset. The family moved to Snargate Rectory, and Harold attende Hastings School of Art before transferring to Slade School of Fine Art (1897-1901).In 1907, Gilman met Walter Sickert, and together they found the Fitzroy Street Group in that year and the Camden Town Group in 1911. He taught at Westminster School of Art

Condition Report: The timepiece movement is presently fully-wound but not currently running. The escapement appears intact and undamaged hence the mechanism is most likely just gummed-up with dry oil hence requires a clean/service. The regulation lever is presently disconnected. The dial appears free form visible damage/faults. The barometer does not appear to respond to change in pressure when 'bag tested' hence will require attention. The scale appears to be printed paper and has some light discolouration/rubbing and the bezel appears have been glued into position (traces of glue visible to the interior). Both cases appear to be in fine original condition with faults limited to a couple tiny enamel chips (hard to find even with very close examination). The wooden back panels are probably later additions with both exhibiting some light surface wear. There is no winding key present.Condition Report Disclaimer

A SWISS WATCHMAKER'S TOPPING TOOLPOSSIBLY BY HENRI PICARD ET FRERES, LA CHAUX FONDS, LATE 19th CENTURYOf standard form with work held vertically beneath a poppet over an X and Y axis adjustable stage next to a horizontal cutter driven via a sequence of pulleys by a four-spoke hand wheel with serpentine crossings, on tapered nickel-finish foot secured to a mahogany platform base.24.5cm (9.75ins) high, 27.5cm (10.75ins) wide, 20cm (8ins) deep.  Related tools are illustrated in Crom, Theodore R. Y&nbspA SWISS TULIPWOOD BANDED BURR WALNUT 'BELLS IN SIGHT' MUSIC BOXFABRIQUE DE GENEVE FOR RETAIL BY J.R. LAFLEUR AND SON, LONDON, CIRCA 1880Playing a choice of eight airs including Le Talisman and Giroffe, Giroffe via a 12.5 inch pinned cylinder on an 84 tooth comb, accompanied by a line of 9 engine-turned graduated bells set behind the gilt painted steel bed incorporating large ratchet-crank wound going barrel to the left opposing governor, start/stop and tune selection mechanisms to the right, set beneath hinged glazed cover with start/stop and change/repeat selection lever to the right and crank wind handle stamped with serial number 22520 to the left, the lid with tune sheet listing the eight-airs in ink within decorative foliate scroll printed surround incorporating text FABRIQUE DE GENEVE to upper margin and applied with pasted retailers label FROM J. R. LAFLEUR & SON, Music Publishers and Instrument Makers, No. 15 GREEN STREET, LEICESTER SQUARE, W.C., LONDON to lower margin, the exterior of the box veneered with book-matched burr walnut veneers within tulip wood banded borders to the ebonised ogee-edged lid, the front and sides with conforming veneers and the rear also finished in walnut but without the banding, on ebonised squab feet.26cm (10ins) high, 58cm (22.75ins) wide, 30.5cm (12ins) deep. J.R. Lafleur and Son were founded in 1861 as musical instruments makers and publishers of music. The were based at Green Street, Leicester Square, London 1862-1911 before moving to 147 Wardour Street in 1912. Lafleur and Son were bought-out by Boosey and Hawkes in 1917 but still continued trading in their name until at least 1931. Condition Report: Mechanism is in relatively clean condition with overall slight oxidation/mellowing to the brass. The comb appears free from damage and it will play with good positive action and clear sound. The bell hammers appear complete and undamaged but are very 'lazy' in their action so are prone to sticking - this is probably due to gummed-up oil rather than being indicative of damage/losses. The operating levers function as they should, the panel around the levers is a little loose and there are no labels denoting their function present. The internal cabinet fittings are present and have probably been re-ebonised. The tune sheet is intact but with some overall browning/staining and has evidence of a pasted label being removed from just beneath the upper margin. The lock to the box is lacking its tongue (previously fitted to the lid) hence is inoperative. Externally the box is in sound original condition with faults limited to slight bumps, scuffs and historic small localised filling within the burrs of the veneers. Condition Report Disclaimer

AN AUSTRIAN ENGRAVED GILT BRASS GRANDE-SONNERIE STRIKING AND REPEATING ALARM CARRIAGE CLOCK JOSEPH JESSNER, VIENNA, CIRCA 1840The rectangular thirty-hour quadruple going barrel movement striking the quarters on a coiled and sounding and sounding the hour every quarter on a second large gong, the going train with duplex escapement incorporating two escape wheels mounted next to each on the same arbor positioned between the plates, regulated by sprung monometallic balance set behind a pierced balance bridge with jewelled endstone applied to the upper margin of the backplate, the alarm with hammer pivoted towards the lower margin sounding on the smaller gong, the 2.5 inch wide rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial with blued steel moon hands and plain alarm setting hand over signature J. Jessner, in Wien to lower margin, the rectangular gilt brass case with repeat button and concealed hinged carrying handle to the fine rococo scroll engraved top surface, over slender canted upper mouldings incorporating rounded angles and repeating leaf bordered bevel-glazing hinge front panel, the sides engraved with further rococo scrollwork and the rear with shuttered winding holes, A/R regulation sector to centre and engraved Jos, Jessner in Wien to lower margin, on skirt base with floral trail decorated canted upper mouldings and rococo scroll engraved panels flanked by curved angles to each side over disc feet.13cm (5.125ins) high with handle down, 8.5cm (3.375ins) wide, 6cm (2.375ins) deep. Joseph Jessner is believed to have been working in Graz (Austria) in around 1806 before moving to Vienna becoming a Master clockmaker in 1814/15. In 1835 he became clockmaker to the Royal Austrian Court, a position which he held until 1848 (when he presumably died). Jessner was a fine maker with two high-precision regulators housed in the Wien Museum, Vienna. Condition Report: The movement is complete and appears all-original with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The going train is running, the quarter train is also working but is currently not counting correctly during normal running (but will when repeat is activated) hence requires adjustment. The hour train mainspring has gone hence it is not operational although the train itself appears to be sound. The spring for the alarm train has also gone; the mechanism otherwise looks fine although the hammer is detached. The dial appears to have been restored hence appears free form visible defects. The case is generally in very good original condition retaining original gilding albeit with overall edge rubbing and oxidation. The pointer for the regulation adjustment square to the backplate is missing.Clock does not have a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

A FINE WILLIAM IV 18CT GOLD QUARTER-REPEATING POCKET WATCH WITH CYLINDER ESCAPEMENTARNOLD AND DENT, LONDON, 1832The gilt single fusee movement with four columnar pillars pinned through the backplate and cylinder escapement regulated by sprung three-arm flat-rim steel balance, the quarter repeat-work operated via plunger to the suspension post sounding the hours on a gong followed by ting-tang quarters on the same and a second smaller gong set within the circumference of the case, the backplate with plain balance cock incorporating faceted ruby endstone and with wedge-shaped foot, set beside raised plate for the mainspring barrel applied with spring set-up ratchet opposing Slow/Fast regulation lever and engraved signature Jn'o. R. Arnold, London with serial number 3882 and further text & Dent to the spring barrel pivot plate, the circular white enamel Roman numeral dial signed ARNOLD & DENT, LONDON, 3882 and with gold/gilt moon hands, the engine-turned silvered case with suspension post and loop at twelve o'clock, crest engraved as stag to the centre of the rear cover and inscribed Guy Lenox Prendergast to the inner cover, marks for London 1832 maker HH.The pillar plate 3.5cm (1.375ins) diameter, the case 4.8cm (1.875ins) diameter. Provenance:The Leonard Fuller Collection. Purchased from Aubrey Brocklehurst, London, 29th August 1967 for £95. The inscription to the inside cover indicates that the present watch was formerly the property of Guy Lenox Prendergast (1773-1845). Prendergast was of Irish descent and held many positions in the East India Company, mostly in Madras and Bombay, from 1793 (including chief Judge, Bombay 1816) until 1826. He was then elected as M.P. for Lymington 1827. Edward John Dent was a talented horologist who at the age of 17 transferred his apprenticeship from the trade of tallow chandler to watchmaking under the charge of Edward Gaudin in 1807. By 1817 he had become well known as a watch and clockmaker receiving commissions from the Admiralty for a 'Standard Astronomical Clock' and pocket chronometers for the Colonial Office Africa Expedition. In 1830 Dent went into partnership with John Roger Arnold which continued until 1840 when he left and set up business alone as E.J. Dent at 82 Strand, London, primarily making marine chronometers, watches and precision clocks.John Roger Arnold was born in 1769, the son of the famous watch and chronometer maker John Arnold. He initially trained under his father and then Abraham Louis Breguet before, in 1787, going into partnership with his father. The firm of Arnold and Son subsequently became principal suppliers of early marine chronometers to the Royal Navy and lasted until the death of John Arnold senior in 1799. John Roger Arnold continued the business, in 1817 he was appointed Master of the Clockmakers' Company and in 1821 he was credited with the invention of the 'U' shaped compensated chronometer balance. In 1830 Arnold took Edward John Dent into partnership (after the unfortunate demise of his adopted son and likely successor); the partnership lasted ten years before being dissolved leaving Arnold to work alone until his death in 1843. The present lot would appear to be a particularly early product of the Arnold and Dent partnership as the '& Dent' text engraved to the mainspring pivot plate would appear to be an addition executed after John Roger Arnold's signature. This would suggest that the movement had already been finished by Arnold and was awaiting dialling/casing before the creation of the partnership in 1831. Condition Report: Watch is in fine, clean fully working condition. The backplate retains original gilt finish with minimal wear/scratching. The dial has two very slight hairline cracks at nine o'clock as well as a tiny edge chip (all only visible on very close examination). The case has overall light to moderate wear to exterior and the marks are a little rubbed otherwise case is in very good original condition with bezel and rear closing tightly.Gross weight 113g, watch has a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

* JAMES WATT RGI (SCOTTISH 1931 - 2022), INNELLAN PIER oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated '95 verso framed image size 61cm x 92cm, overall size 75cm x 105cm Label verso: T. & R. Annan & Sons Ltd., GlasgowNote: James Watt was born in Port Glasgow in 1931 to Alexander Watt and his wife Isabella (nee Hooper). His entire family, including his grandfather, and everybody he knew, were in shipbuilding. He was always passionate about boats. He believed he was very lucky. "I was in the right place at the right time. I caught the tail-end of the Clydeside shipbuilding boom in the 1950s. Shipyards had full order-books and the river teemed with craft of every sort. So I always had a subject”. His paintings are in a formidable array of collections – including those of HM The Queen and Prince Philip, The Princess Royal, The Arts Council, The Hunterian, Glasgow Museums, Paisley Museum & Art Gallery, IBM, Britoil, the Danish Embassy, Yarrow Shipbuilders, McKean Museum and Art Gallery, Clyde Shipping Co, the Royal Bank of Scotland and also the town council in the Faroes. Watt went to Glasgow School of Art for four years where he was taught by Ted Odling, Douglas Percy Bliss, and David Donaldson. In 1958 he was one of 13 founders of the Glasgow Group, an artists' co-operative which continues to this day. Irritated by the conformist, unadventurous policies of local exhibiting societies like the Royal Scottish Academy and the RGI, and at the dearth of commercial outlets in the city, they got together with other GSA students and graduates to exhibit at Glasgow’s then-beautiful McLellan Galleries. The Glasgow Group was the Transmission Gallery of its day. After two years National Service in the army, from 1955 to 1957 he became an art teacher, and a much-beloved one at that. He was noted for his kindness and good counsel, and one former student says of him: "I had pretty much zero talent but he sparked a lifelong love and interest in art." Another remembered “His was the fastest-moving Volvo down the school drive. He was some man." Later Watt became a member of the RGI and was elected a member of Society of Scottish Artists in 1965. In 1997 he received The Royal Bank of Scotland Award at the Glasgow Institute. He dedicated much of his life to recording the River Clyde and its industries, and his vast body of work forms a vital archive of the river. Greenock's McLean Museum and Art Gallery exhibition, The Lost Clyde: The Paintings of James Watt, was mounted to celebrate his 90th birthday. James was also the father of Alison Watt OBE FRSE RSA, one of Britain's best-known painters.

Erwartete Ausrufzeit (+/- 15min)12.09.2024; 16:35 h (MEST)VersandkostenSchweiz / Switzerland: CHF 115.-Europa / Europe: CHF 185.-Übrige Länder / Other countries: CHF 235.-
