A fine quality William and Mary 8-day longcase clock by Christopher Gould, circa 1690, the elaborate case of ebonised pearwood inlaid with coloured marquetry and green stained ivory decoration, the marquetry inlaid hood surmounted by brass ball finials, bull's eye green glass lenticle panel to the case door, the 11" square brass dial having a silvered chapter ring with silvered secondary dial, calendar aperture and ringed winding holes with cast cherub spandrels, signed C H R Gould Londoni Fecit, brass 5-pillar movement, together with key pendulum and weights. Sheet attached inside the case door states the history of this clock, including that this clock is described in Alan Lloyd's Chats On Old Clocks 1917, and subsequently exhibited in an exhibition of English clocks at Temple Newton House Leeds 1949, provenance: from a local deceased estate. An impressively thorough work, the most ambitious of its kind since Magna Britannia et Hibernia (1720-1731). Originally conceived as a more modest publication, it became an intensive and occasionally fraught project. In 1800, the publishers Vernor and Hood proposed to Britton that he produce six volumes of topographical commentary. He and Brayley had become friends as teenagers and had already collaborated successfully oin a literary endeavour. They embarked on a walking tour of thousands of miles for these initial volumes, for which they shared credit evenly. At this point, Brayley was predominantly occupied with the text, while Britton was "the organizing genius throughout" (ODNB), overseeing the travel, correspondence, sourcing of materials, and managing the illustrations. When the series ran to further volumes, the two men divided responsibility for certain counties. Colonel R. Meinertzhagen: 'Nicoll's Birds of Egypt', London, Hugh Rees Ltd., 1930, 1st edition, 2 volumes, portrait frontis + 38 plates (31 of which coloured, 7 photogravure) after G.E. Lodge, Roland Green and H. Gronvold + 3 folding maps as called for, large 4to (33 x 26cm), original publisher's green cloth gilt. First edition of the most systematic account on Egyptian birds. The work is based on Nicoll's manuscript with notes and description of the Egyptian avifauna. Some ninety species of birds in the paintings on ancient tombs are identified; it is noted that many species became extinct because of the disappearance of the papyrus thickets due to the aridity of the country. Michael John Nicoll (1880-1925), assistant director of the Zoological Gardens at Giza, was an outstanding naturalist. It had always been his intention to publish a detailed account of the birds of Egypt, but he died before the completion of this work. His friend Meinertzhagen (1878-1967), a British war hero and ornithologist, was approached by Nicoll's widow to complete and publish the manuscript. (2)
