An embroidered coat of arms, English circa 1840 The initials ‘V R’ worked in cord and denoting 'Victoria Regina'. 45cm x 56cm Provenance: Joanna Booth Antiques, London This sumptuous embroidered panel intended for court use would have been produced by the professional Broderers Guild. The raised work is achieved by padding with heavy cords with the gilt and silver threads couched on top which almost gives the effect of carving. The eyes including those of the pair of cherubs above are applied glass beads. The latter with their palms of peace appear to be auxiliary supporters to the crown whilst both lion and unicorn are balancing on the scroll bearing the words ‘Dieu et mon droit’.

Lalique was not content with simply designing his models, but also founded a factory to produce them in large quantities, patenting several innovative glass manufacturing processes, and various technical effects such as "Lalique satin" or opalescent glass. Pieces by Lalique are preserved in prominent museums such as the Corning Museum of Glass and the Metropolitan Museum of Glass in New York, the Louvre and the Orsay Museum in Paris, among many others.
