Y  A VICTORIAN MAHOGANY UPRIGHT BABY GRAND PIANO BY JOHN BROADWOOD & SONS The soundboard with fragmentary inscription for JOHN BROADWOOD & SONS . MAKER'S TO HER MAJESTY / GREAT PULTNEY STREET The action marked L R 2360 to the upper corner, with ivory keys 179cm high, 124cm wide, 68cm deep Together with a Victorian rosewood revolving piano stool, circa 1860, 46cm at its lowest Please note: Dreweatts have applied for a de minimis exemption for this lot. Ref: ZXGRTADT Condition Report: External Appearance: Marks, knocks, scratches, and abrasions are consistent with age and use.There is a long mark to the right of the fallboard, as well as several scuffs to its left. The music stand has come apart from the inside of the fallboard, and has sustain some damage to either end and will require repairing. All keys are present and are with some discoloration to the central three octaves.The upper fabric part of the piano appears to be in good visual and structural condition, but the fabric covering the cut out to the back has sustained significant tears. Internal Anatomy:Internal repairs and re-tuning are required to restore this piano to a playable standard. The top panel detaches to unlock -- along with hooks -- the front part of the piano. There appears to be no dust cover under this, and on the internal body is the mark 'L.R.' and a piano number '2360'. Exposed here are a layer of long thin wooden strips connecting keys to hammers. All of these are in working order except for five: the top D (numbered inside as 75) has come detached at the hammer, the second to top C (numbered 67) has come detached at the key, the second to top A (numbered 58) has come detached at the key, the second to top G# (numbered 57) has come detached at the key and hammer, and the fourth to bottom F# (numbered 31) has come detached at the key. These will require repairing. Once dismantled, this exposes the string section. All strings and tuning pins appear to be present, however, all require significant re-tuning. The soundboard behind also appears to be intact and functional, and all hook mechanisms within the piano are sucre and in working order. RICHARD CLAUDE BELT (1851-1920) A MARBLE PORTRAIT BUST OF THE HON.ELIOT CONSTANTINE YORKE DATED 1879 On socle base, inscribed to reverse 'R C BELT SCULT LONDON 1879' 69cm highProvenance: Probably commissioned by the Earls of Hardwicke, and thence by descent. The Hon. Captain Eliot Constantine Yorke (1843-1878) was the fourth son of Admiral Charles Philip Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke, and the Hon. Susan Liddell. A Member of Parliament, he was also a captain in the Cambridgeshire Militia, an Equerry to His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and a Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire. On 11 February 1873, Yorke married Annie, daughter of Sir Anthony de Rothschild, 1st Baronet. The marriage had no issue and he died in 1878, aged 35. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Paint and water splashes and dirt accretion. Natural inclusions and some darker veining, several pockmarks including larger one under his chin. Some scuffing, marks and stains around shoulders and back edges. A VICTORIAN FIGURED WALNUT STEREOSCOPE VIEWER AND CABINET MID 19TH CENTURY, BY R & J BECK, CORNHILL, LONDON The cabinet enclosing compartments containing a collection of stereoscope slides and further compartment to house the viewer, the viewer with maker's details to the eye-pieces Cabinet 33cm high, 46cm wide, 23cm deep Together with a mahogany kaleidoscope, late 19th century, 33cm high And a further hand-held stereoscope viewer The collection of slides include a number from the International Exhibition, 1862 held at the Crystal Palace, by the London Stereoscopic and Photography Library, and approximately twenty two glass slides A notable modern aficionado of Stereoscopy is Sir Brian May, lead guitarist of Queen and astrophysicist. Condition Report: Walnut stereoscope- optics seem good- brass adjustments largely work well and it fits together well when assembled onto box to interior. Leather insert to top with ring marks, gouges and losses, Case generally good but no key. Some scuffs and marks from use. FOLLOWER OF SAMUEL SCOTT SOMERSET HOUSE, ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL BEYOND Oil on canvas 61 x 131cm (24 x 51½ in.) In a carved and pierced giltwood frame Provenance: Property of Florence Julia, Lady Granet, mother in law to Denis Mackail, and thence by descent On the second day of Samuel Scott's Studio Sale, 12-13 January 1773, lot 61 is listed: 'one large view from Somerset House to St Pauls by ditto [Samuel Scott]', suggesting this was a popular vista for topographical artists such as Scott (1710-1772), a follower of Canaletto (R. Kingzett, 'A Catalogue of the Works of Samuel Scott', The Volume of the Walpole Society, vol. 48, 1980-82, pp. 24, 124). The Hon. Florence Julia Gully (1871-1949) was the daughter of William Court Gully, 1st Viscount Selby. On 12 November 1892, she married Sir William Guy Granet, later General Manager of the Midland Railway. They lived in St George Hanover Square, London, in 1901, and from 1934 until Sir Guy's death in 1944 at Burleigh Court, nr. Stroud, Gloucestershire. She died on 17 September 1949, in Sussex, at the age of 78. Their daughter, Diana Caroline Granet (1893-1949) married Denis George Mackail in 1917. Condition Report: The canvas has been lined. Stretcher marks visible in a natural light. It also appears to have been extended at the upper and right edges. These joins are visible in a natural light, along with some associated cracking. Craquelure throughout the canvas but noticeably heavier to the extended edges. A dirty varnish has caused some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals some light retouching along the lower edge. There is a cloudy varnish which may be concealing further retouching. Condition Report Disclaimer

Goodden, Falmouth, almost all on headed pale blue note paper from Footbridge Cottage, Long Wittenham, Abingdon, Berkshire (Gibbings' home), mainly discussing wood engravings by Robert Gibbings and Golden Cockerel Press publications, 9 printed publicity brochures for Golden Cockerel Press, circa 1931-1959, and an unsigned wood engraving by Gibbings, Mid Coral Caves, Bermuda (framed and glazed) and a folio scrap book on Robert Gibbings compliled by Gwendolen Young, circa 1950s, containing news cuttings and printed articles by Gibbings, several reproductions of his work, and an autograph name and address for the artist in his own hand in pencil (mounted front)QTY: (30)NOTE:Provenance: Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blundell Goodden (1881-1972), Welsh Regiment, and British Military Attaché, Bucharest. * Brittan Willis (Henry, 1810-1884). Leigh Woods, 1836, oil on canvas, signed and dated to lower centre, relined, canvas size 70 x 94 cm (27 1/2 x 37 ins), Frost and Reed label to verso with stock number (50254), and title 'A View of Durdham Down, Bristol, from Leigh Woods, looking across the Avon Gorge to the Observatory', antique-style gilt molded frame, gilt plaque with title, date and artist's details to lower frame (85 x 109 cm) QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Frost and Reed Ltd, 10 Clare Street, Bristol, BS1 1XX, by 1975; Estate of Martin R. Davies, Bristol.Neal Solly’s biography of William James Müller records that Brittan Willis was a member of a ‘sketching-club’ formed in Bristol in 1832 or 1833. It included Müller, Samuel Jackson, T. L. Rowbotham, and William West, the builder of the Clifton Observatory in the centre distance. Adjoining the tower, West’s brand new rotating dome, which housed a substantial revolving telescope, can just be seen. Farther to the left, between the tree trunks, is the columned facade of Camp House, completed in 1833 for Charles Pinney, former mayor of Bristol. Willis emphasises the detachment of Leigh Woods by being deliberately up-to-date and including details that foliage could have conveniently obscured. Willis emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1842, but ill health drove him home and he subsequently re-established himself in London, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1844 and extensively at the British Institution and the Old Water Colour Society.
