‘there will in no way at all be a just, honest, stable, comprehensive peace until the arrogant common enemy, who has out of weakness so violently brought on war from all sides, withdraws’ ANNE: (1665-1714) Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland 1702-07. A fine L.S., Anna R, with a holograph subscription, three pages, folio, Palace at Windsor, 3rd July 1709, to Franz Ludwig, Count Palatine, Bishop of Worms, and Johann Wilhelm, Count Palatine on the Rhine, Elector of Bavaria, in Latin. The Queen writes, in part, 'Most illustrious and excellent Prince, dearest cousin and friend, as well as most serene Prince, dearest brother, cousin, and friend, the new peace negotiation by the French, which is too little sincere, has no doubt already been made known [and] it would be superfluous to explain to Your Excellency and Your Electoral Excellency with how much unworthiness the most Christian King not only refused to have several preliminary articles concluded in The Hague confirmed, & after their having been approved by his plenipotentiaries, but also in contempt of all his allies, he has abused [them] through insinuations he has thought up to enrage the spirits of his subjects. We hope indeed that the long since renowned skills will remove the anger from all hearts and that the allies will all be of the same mind as We that there will in no way at all be a just, honest, stable, comprehensive peace until the arrogant common enemy, who has out of weakness so violently brought on war from all sides, withdraws, that he must by necessity or unwillingly desist. These things may already speak for themselves. We nonetheless, from Our concern for the public weal, deemed it to be not unseemly to appeal with Our exhortation to Your Excellency and Your Electoral Excellency to urge and cause everyone of authority in the region of the Upper Rhine by most grave admonishments to support it, as well as to provide a share of fighting forces, of soldiers and funds, and also at this moment, by which the moments of the greatest causes turn to Our example and that of the order of the general domains of the Belgian Federation, to send men and funds & thus expand the German combat army on the Upper Rhine and fortify it by means of the things needed for war, so that not only the boundaries of the Empire are protected, but also the provinces broken off at the time can be reintegrated. This sole hope of a war to be completed with glory and a peace to be maintained with security. To this be added the hope for divine grace, which will not be rejected as unseemly, health, liberty, and event the indignation at such an enemy. We thus humbly appeal to Your Excellency and Your Electoral Excellency to take active part in the cause, for haste is necessary so that this best occasion not slip from our hands…..' Countersigned at the foot by Henry Boyle (1669-1725) 1st Baron Carleton, Anglo-Irish politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer 1701-08, Northern Secretary 1708-10 and Lord President of the Council 1721-25. (AGW=0.1155 oz.)Composition: 916.0/1000 Gold. The CoinThis is an extremely rare pattern issue by the great Richard Yeo in his prime. Only five examples, including this one, have traded publicly in the last two decades. This particularly delicate and well-proportioned bust exists on no other issue. This is also the joint finest graded example of this unique bust. The svelte slopes of neck, cheek and shoulder are so perfectly and subtly engraved, giving the impression of freshly pressed snow. A velvet lustre shimmers and dances over each curve breathing life into the regnal depiction. Flipping the coin over, a bold and precisely engraved royal shield meets the eye. This contrast perfectly complements each side of the coin, accenting both the softness of royal flesh and the cold strength of aristocracy. All of this boldly stands out against beautifully reflective fields of a subtle olive tone that under direct light erupts into a blazing yellow. Truly a world class example, having graced the Dangar Collection, Slaney Collection and British Collection. Befitting only of the cream of numismatic collectors. Richard Yeo (c.1720-79)Richard Yeo first came to prominence in 1746 upon his creation of the official medal for the Battle of Culloden. From 1749, he was assistant engraver at the Royal Mint under the great John Sigmund Tanner. In 1775, Yeo officially succeeded Tanner as Chief Engraver at the mint. However, as a result of Tanner’s failing eyesight and other health issues Yeo had been acting effectively as Chief Engraver since 1760 but without the appropriate pay. This was amended in 1768 when he was awarded £500 for past labours. Tanner designed and engraved British coinage as Chief until his death in 1779. Yeo was an extremely accomplished engraver producing several patterns and circulation issues throughout his career and his particularly fine style brought a delicate realism to coins of the period.Yeo was also a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists (1761-91) and founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He exhibited his works at the Academy in both 1769 and 1770. The Slaney CollectionThis coin was a member of the prestigious Slaney Collection – one of the most revered collections of British coinage ever assembled. For decades collectors had wondered where the cream of the numismatic crop liquidated in the 40s and 50s had disappeared to, only to find most of it in the Slaney Collection, which was sold by SPINK in two sales in May 2003 and May 2015. The collection sold for over £4 million; broke numerous sale records; is considered a milestone in British coinage; and ushered in a new era of serious growth in the market. This coin features no such issues and with just a handful of examples graded higher (undoubtedly including resubmissions) this is one of the best examples of the issue available to collectors. The coin has beautiful surfaces that glint and glimmer with a subtle, swirling lustre - extremely rare on these issues. The strike is good for the issue and Croker’s strong and characterful design exists here proudly. A world-class example of a problematic series.John Croker (1670-1741)Johann Croker, who later anglicised his name to John, was born in Dresden, Saxony in 1690. As a child, Croker lost his father, an accomplished cabinet maker, and was then taken under the wing of his goldsmith and jeweller godfather. The budding artist flourished under this apprenticeship and upon its completion made his way to England, via the Netherlands, where he worked as a jeweller and medallist until becoming an assistant to Henry Harris, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, in 1697 – not long after a not-yet-knighted Isaac Newton joined the mint as Warden. In 1705, the same year Mr Newton became Sir Isaac, Croker was appointed as Chief Engraver. Croker, working closely with Newton, engraved nearly all dies of Queen Anne, King George I, and many of George II. Few engravers have left as great an impact on British coinage as John Croker. In 1729, a 24-year-old John Sigmund Tanner (1705-75) was appointed his assistant. With Croker’s death in 1741, Tanner carried on the torch of Chief Engraver.PLEASE NOTE: 6% Buyer Premium + VAT on this lot. No other fees, including live bidding. An Italian micromosaic, Rome, circa 1800, depicting a recumbent brown and white spaniel, within a grassy landscape, with trees beyond, the oval panel edged with a red and white millefiore pellet surround, mounted as a brooch within a finely chased gold floral border, with glazed hinged locket compartment verso, and ring suspension above, dimensions 35 x 28mm. The micromosaic is in the manner of Antonio Aguatti (late 18th century - 1846). £1,200-£1,500 --- Provenance: A similar example depicting the same composition was sold at Christie’s, 11 April 2002, Sale 6674, The Dr Anton C R Dreesmann Collection. Lot 842. In the 18th century, large-scale Italian mosaics, inspired by the grand works of Ancient Rome, were falling out of favour. Reserved mainly for decorating the floors of Rome’s religious buildings– ie St Peter’s Basilica - the artisans responsible for creating them were increasingly short of work. Employed by the Studio del Mosaico della Fabbrica della Basilica di San Pietro, later known as the Vatican Mosaic Workshop, they supplemented their income by creating miniaturised versions of their mosaics to sell to private customers. Giacomo Raffaelli (1775-1836) is widely considered to be the founding father of the craft of micromosaics. These miniature works of art grew in popularity with the arrival of wealthy travellers on the Grand Tour, perfectly capturing Italy’s rich artistic tradition in miniature, and making the perfect souvenir from their travels in Italy. The art form of micromosaics made dramatic advances from the classically inspired images of architecture prevalent in the late 18th century, towards more natural representations, due largely to the mosaicist Antonio Aguatti. Aguatti worked for the Vatican workshops whilst simultaneously running his own studio, and is credited with perfecting the techniques to create a variety of tesserae shapes, rather than just the uniform square and rectangular forms, and for the skills to blend different coloured tints. These multicoloured shaped tesserae lent greater realism to the the portrayal of plants, flowers, birds and animals. By the 1820s, Aguatti’s images were widely copied by other workshops, making exact attribution to an individual master impossible without signatures on each work. The depiction of dogs was highly popular as part of the romantic genre of the 19th century, dogs being symbolic of faithful love. Due to their association with royalty, King Charles spaniels were frequently portrayed in paintings and micromosaics, this trend for pets as subjects largely led by the artist Edwin Landseer (1802-73). Literature: Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel: The Gilbert Collection, Micromosaics, London 2002: For the similar composition of a spaniel in micromosaic signed by Antonio Aguatti, see p.75, no. 23. Condition Report The panel is in very good condition, using shaped and vari-tinted tesserae. Non missing. Light surface wear only to the gold mount visible from the reverse. Gross weight 14.8gm.
