Lot 453

WW1 British Medal Pair Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, British War and Victory medals, “L-10767 PTE P. SPREADBOROUGH THE QUEEN’S R.” An interesting pair of medals to a soldier who was court martialled on multiple times and on 1 occasion he was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. Percy Spreadborough was from Leytonstone, Essex and attested for the 6th Battalion on 10th September 1914 giving his address as the Municipal Lodging House. In August 1915 he was tried by Field General Court Martial being sentenced to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour the sentence being suspended and then remitted. Later that year he was again in trouble and on 22nd November he was tried by FGCM the charge being ‘When on active service disobeying in such a manner as to show wilful defiance of authority a lawful command given personally by his superior officer in the execution of his office’. Being found guilty he was sentence to 5 years imprisonment this later being commuted to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour. Released in May 1918, he returned to duty managing to stay out of trouble (or at least not get caught!) until 12th February 1919 when he was absent for 59 hours and failed to comply with an order, sentenced to 14 days Field Punishment No.2. He was discharged on 4th September 1920. On the 1939 Register he is shown as being a resident of the Warlingham Park Mental Hospital his occupation stated as being an ex-soldier. He is also entitled to a 1914-15 Star medal.

A pair of medals to recipient in the London Irish Rifles who was killed in action during the German Sprong Offensive in March 1918. British War and Victory medals,”6146 PTE J.T. GRIFFITHS 18-LOND. R.” James Thomas Griffiths was born in Cardiff but living in Dover, Kent when he enlisted. He served in France with 18th (County of London) Battalion (London Irish Rifles) from 1st September 1916 until his death in action on 21st March 1918. Renumbered as 593368 he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

A Great War pair of medals to the Hampshire Regiment. British War and Victory medals, “29296 CPL. F. WHITLOCK HAMPS. R.” with an enamelled Merchant Navy sweetheart badge (reverse marked silver). Frederick Whitlock served with 2nd Battalion and was awarded a pair of medals for his war service. Information supplied with this lot attributes these medals to Steward Frederick Whitlock who died on 6th March 1946 whilst serving in the Merchant Navy on S.S. Almanzora and who is buried in Bitterne (Holy Saviour) Churchyard, Hampshire.

A Great War 1914-15 star medal trio to soldier in the 7th Battalion Essex Regiment whose active service started at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli. 1914-15 Star medal, British War and Victory medals, “3110 PTE. A. FRY ESSEX R.” some verdigris on the star. Alfred Fry served with 7th Battalion Essex Regiment and was present when they landed on ‘A’ Beach, Suvla Bay, Gallipoli at 5.30am on 11th August 1915. He was later renumbered as 300614.

WW1 British Medal Pair Royal West Kent Regiment, British War and Victory medals, “200750 PTE. E.G. MANNING R.W. KENT R.” Ernest George Manning was awarded a pair of medals for his war service with the Royal West Kent Regiment.

WW1 British War Medal 1917 Casualty Middlesex Regiment, British War medal, “2505 PTE. F. PREBE MIDD’X R.” Frank Prebe from Rosebury Gardens, Harringay attested for service on 1st September 1914. He landed in France on 12th March 1915 with the 1/7th Battalion Middlesex Regiment and was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 aged 23 years. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

A Great War Battle of the Somme killed in action Victory medal to the 1/8th Middlesex Regiment, Allied Victory medal, “5970 PTE. W WICKS MIDD’X R.” 23-year old William Wicks from Kings Lynn, Norfolk was killed in action on 18th September 1916 serving with the 1/8th Battalion attached to the 17th Battalion. He now rests in an identified grave in Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, France. He is also entitled to the British War medal.

WW1 British Medal Pair Norfolk Regiment, British War and Victory medals, “24261 PTE. C. HALLS NORF. R.” 29-year old Charles Halls also served in the Machine Gun Corps from which he was discharged being no longer fit for further service on 2nd November 1918. He was issued a Silver War Badge in addition to this pair of medals.

George Watts served with the 2nd Battalion in France from 1st June 1915. He later served with in the Labour Corps (#464621) and was discharged to Class Z Army Reserve on 28th March 1919 giving his address as Princess Road, Richmond.

CAHILL SUFF R.”, National Fire Brigades Association 10-year Long Service medal in bronze, on original pin fitting, edge of the medal engraved “CHARLES M CAHILL”. Contact marks to the reverse of the star and to the service number on the British War medal and Victory medals. Medals are accompanied by a large collection of other items and ephemera: Princess Mary 1914 Christmas tin containing a 1414 Christmas card and a paper wrapper for the cigarettes. 8 Great War silk postcards, some with inner cards, all have damage to the reverse consistent with being removed from an album. Army Book 64, named to 3/8288 Suffolk Regiment, stamped and dated Felixstowe, 20th January 1919. 2x Order of Buffaloes medals in cases of issue both with engraved details named to Charles Cahill with dates ranging between 19th August 1935 (1st Degree) and 8th January 1947 (Exalted). Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes examination certificate for Gambert Lodge, dated 26th August 1941. Defence medal claim card notifying of the issue of the ribbon for the medal (ribbon present in lot) to Mr C Cahill, National Fire Service. Borough of Sudbury Coronation medallion, 26th June 1902. 2 West Suffolk Education Committee attendance medals. 2 Pieces of patriotic hair ribbon (red, white and blue). Suffolk Regiment printed Christmas card (1923) from Sergeant and Mrs. G Ruggles with an undated newspaper cutting regarding their wedding. White metal pocket watch (not working). 3 cap badges (2 have been modified with a brooch fitting to the reverse). 2 Sweetheart badges (A.S.C. and Royal engineers). 2 newspaper cuttings (undated) relating to the death of Charles Cahill. A printed book of daily prayers. An interesting collection of items to Charles Michael Cahill who was born on 29th September 1892 and lived in Sudbury Suffolk. He served in France with the 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment from 10th October 1914 and the issued of the clasp to the 1914 Star is confirmed on his medal index card. He married Alice Ruggles in October 1916 and was at some point attached to 76th Trench Mortar Battery. After the war he settled in Sudbury with his wife and during the Second World War he qualified for a Defence medal for his service with the Fire Brigade. Charles Cahill died in January 1951 in Chelmsford Essex.

A single Victory medal to a soldier in the 8th Battalion Hampshire Regiment who landed a Suvla Bay in August 1915, allied victory medal, ”1935 PTE. G. BURT HAMPS. R.” Gordon Burt served with the 1/8th Battalion Hampshire Regiment and was present when they landed at Suvla Bay at 9.10pm on 10th August 1915. Later renumbered as 205456 has was disembodied on 28th March 1919.

Originally from Bolton, Robert Brobbin attested for service on 3rd September 1914 and landed in France on 8th June 1915. He was discharged as no longer fit for further service due to wounds aged 34 on 3rd August 1916 and was later issued with a Silver War Badge

An Interesting Triplicate Issue Great War 1914 Star Medal Trio Royal West Kent Regiment. 1914 Star medal with clasp, British War and Victory medals, all impressed “L/8198 PTE. W.J. VIDLER R.W. KENT R. (TRIPLICATE)”, group mounted as worn. Originally from Greenwich, William John Vidler served in France from 15th August 1914, he later served with the Machine Gun Corps with service number 62351. His Medal Index Card indicates that his medals were replaced on 10th March 1965 whist he was a Chelsea Pensioner, but we have been unable to identify the other occasion when they were replaced. It is unusual to see medals triplicate issue medals.

BERKS R.” Charles Eales served with 2/4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, his place of residence as listed as Broadmoor Asylum, Berkshire although we have not been able to confirm in what capacity he was in this establishment. He was and killed in action on 22nd August 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

F., Rv: Ludwig steht vor seinem Thron und empfängt Bittsteller, FACILIS AD PRINCIPEM ADITUS MDCLXI, vz-, schöne Patina, leichter Berieb des Reliefs, Randkerben, Kratzer, partiell fleckig, ca. 36 g. Jean Mauger (1648-1712) erlernte das Drechslerhandwerk in seiner Heimatstadt Dieppe, bevor er 1677 nach Paris ging, wo er von 1685 bis zu seinem Tod in der Pariser Münze arbeitete. Als außergewöhnlich produktiver Künstler schuf er in weniger als sieben Jahren 250 der 286 unter Ludwig XIV. geprägten Medaillen, die 1702 in einem Sammelband veröffentlicht wurden. Jean Mauger (1648-1712) learnt the turner's trade in his home town of Dieppe before moving to Paris in 1677, where he worked at the Paris mint from 1685 until his death. An exceptionally prolific artist, in less than seven years he created 250 of the 286 medals minted under Louis XIV, which were published in an anthology in 1702. Most of these were based on his own designs, but he also worked closely with the king's engravers, Henri Rousselle and Michel Molart.

Provenienz: Sammlung Liselore, Grisebach Auktion Nr. 153, 2007 / Privatsammlung Norddeutschland Die zahlreichen Ausflugslokale, die bunten Lunaparks sowie die schöne Natur des Vorortes Breslau-Morgenau, in dem der Künstler Alexander Camaro aufwuchs, waren häufige Motive seiner Bilder, die zwischen figürlicher und informeller Malerei wechseln. Nach dem Studium der Malerei bei Otto Mueller in Breslau von 1920 bis 1926 folgte eine Tanzausbildung in Dresden mit anschließender Karriere in Europa als Tänzer bis in die 1940er Jahre. Die NS-Zeit verbrachte Camaro als Ballettmeister im Ausland, da er mit einem Ausstellungsverbot belegt war. Nach Kriegsende startete er von Kleinmachnow bei Berlin aus den zweiten Teil seiner beachtlichen Karriere als Maler, erhielt 1951 den Berliner Kunstpreis und wurde 1952 als Professor an die Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin berufen. Trotz oder gerade wegen seiner zahlreichen Berufe als Tänzer, Musiker und Kabarettist beeinflusste der Künstler nach dem Krieg die Berliner Boheme und Kunstszene nachhaltig und gilt als maßgeblicher Vertreter der deutschen Nachkriegsmoderne. Eine zurückhaltende Farbigkeit mit dominierenden Brauntönen prägen sein Schaffen nach 1945 und verleihen den Bildern eine ruhige Stimmung, die den Betrachtenden zur Kontemplation einlädt.

Diese Zeit läutet seine zweite künstlerische Phase ein. Es entstehen Werke, die eine deutliche Auflockerung der konstruktiven Farb- und Formelemente der 20er und 30er Jahre aufweisen. Diese neue Freiheit der Form entwickelt sich in den darauffolgenden Jahren um 1952/53 zum Informel hin und gibt diesem wesentliche Impulse. Buchheister zählt zu den Wegbereitern der abstrakten Malerei in Deutschland. Seine Werke sind in zahlreichen öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten, u.a. in der Tate Gallery, London; der Nationalgalerie Berlin; dem Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum in NY sowie dem Nationalmuseum of Modern Art in Tokio.
